Slower VEGAS performance after upgrading GPU?

mamomo wrote on 8/5/2025, 1:20 PM

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded my graphics card to a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5070 WINDFORCE OC, and since then I've noticed that VEGAS Pro feels slower, especially when working on the timeline or previewing heavy projects. Previously, I was using an RTX 3070, and the performance was noticeably smoother.

I've already updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers and made sure the new GPU is selected in both the NVIDIA Control Panel and within VEGAS settings. I've also cleared the cache and adjusted the preview quality settings, but overall performance still feels a bit laggy.

Has anyone else experienced something similar after switching to a new GPU?
Are there any additional tweaks I should check—maybe in VEGAS, the BIOS, or Windows?

I'd really appreciate any advice or shared experiences.
Thanks in advance!

What I did before I upgraded my GPU, I did some rendering tests with my projects. That told me all I needed to know.

Feel free to try the benchmarks in my signature and we can see if it's performing as expected.

Do you notice issues with certain media?

mamomo wrote on 8/6/2025, 2:25 AM

Thank you both for the replies!

To clarify a bit more: what I'm noticing is mostly during timeline navigation, especially when using my Shuttle Pro v2 controller. When I move frame by frame, there's a noticeable delay or sluggishness—sometimes VEGAS even takes a moment to respond. It doesn't feel as fluid as before.

Just the day before upgrading the GPU (from RTX 3070 to RTX 5070), this wasn't an issue at all. Everything felt much snappier with the older card, especially when scrubbing through the timeline or moving frame-by-frame.

Ironically, I might even say that renders feel slightly faster now, but the overall usability and responsiveness of VEGAS have definitely taken a hit.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Could it be something related to drivers, BIOS, or how VEGAS interacts with this newer GPU?

Also, thank you RogerS for the benchmark suggestion — I’ll definitely try it. Unfortunately, I’m currently short on time due to work, but I’ll make sure to run the tests sometime next week.

Thanks again!

That's a little puzzling.

VEGAS may not be optimized for the 50XX GPUs and I've seen reports of issues with 10-bit 422 media in particular. I've tested it with 10XX, 20XX and 40XX NVIDIA GPUs but nothing newer.

Could you share details on the media you are using?

Do let me know when you fill out the benchmarks and I'm happy to take a look. I'm considering a 5070 myself so am highly motivated to see it work in VEGAS!

Super variants of the 50 series GPU's with increased VRAM are on the horizon for release this year.

That’s really interesting to hear. I wouldn’t be surprised if VEGAS isn’t fully optimized yet for the 50XX series, especially given how new the 5070 is.

Regarding the media I’m using:
Most of my current projects include 4K H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) clips — usually 8-bit, but occasionally some 10-bit 4:2:0 files as well. I’ll double-check the specifics and share a proper MediaInfo report as soon as I can, following your FAQ guide.

As for the benchmarks, I truly appreciate your offer to take a look. I’ll try to complete them next week and will definitely post the results here. It’s good to know you’re also considering the 5070 — hopefully we can get it running smoothly in VEGAS soon!

Thanks again for your support and guidance.

🎮 Performance issue explained:

I’ve noticed that since switching from the RTX 3070 to the RTX 5070, the biggest difference is when navigating the timeline, especially using my Shuttle Pro v2.

Moving frame-by-frame feels laggy now.

There's a delay before VEGAS responds, as if it's buffering frames or reacting slower.

Ironically, render times may be slightly better, but the editing responsiveness is clearly worse than before.

This difference is very noticeable because the day before the GPU swap, VEGAS was running smoothly and with perfect timeline feedback.

🧪 I’ll test the benchmark tool you suggested, but due to work I won’t be able to do that until next week. I’ll definitely share the results here once I run it.

Thanks again for all the help — I’m also very curious if it’s just early-stage optimization on VEGAS’ side with the new 50XX series.

Best regards,

Here's something unexpected:

MediaInfo sees this media as being constant framerate:
Modo velocidad fotogramas                : Constante

but VEGAS sees it as variable framerate (VFR):
Vídeo: 00:02:30,183, 29,966 (VFR) fps progresivo, 3840x2160x32, AVC

It's also surprising AVC is being decoded with "  Carpeta: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 22.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\so4compoundplug"

It is normally MxCompound.

Can you check that preferences/ file io are set to defaults? (legacy AVC decoding should be unchecked).

@mamomo You could try to enable Resizable bar in BIOS, not sure this will help however.

Thanks RogerS and bitman for the suggestions.

RogerS — I’ll check the Preferences > File I/O settings to make sure they are at defaults and that “Enable legacy AVC decoding” is unchecked. I’ll report back if switching the decoder changes the timeline responsiveness.

bitman — I’ll also look into enabling Resizable BAR in my BIOS. I’m not sure if it’s currently enabled, so I’ll verify that as well.

I’ll update here once I’ve tested both changes.

mamomo wrote on 8/7/2025, 7:08 AM

Thanks @RogerS and @bitman for the feedback!

✅ Regarding the AVC decoding issue: you were right — I had "Enable legacy AVC decoding" checked in VEGAS preferences. I've now disabled it so that VEGAS can use the more modern mxcompoundplug instead of so4compoundplug. Let’s see if that improves timeline responsiveness.

✅ As for the BIOS, I double-checked my MSI Z490-A PRO and indeed, Resizable BAR was already enabled. Just in case, I re-verified that it’s properly activated, and the NVIDIA Control Panel confirms that as well.

I’ll be testing VEGAS performance now with these updated settings and will report back if I notice any changes.

Thanks again for your help — really appreciate the support from this community!

While you are at it please also uncheck experimental HEVC (which is the older plugin).
