small preview in second monitor

eyethoughtso wrote on 4/15/2006, 11:59 AM
I just figured out how to use my second monitor for previewing. I set up Windows, used the second moitor check, and slid the mixer, and video preview windows across to the 2nd monitor. The problem is the small screen it shows for video preview. It only uses about a third of the screen. I've stretched it in both directions, but it's still not a FULL SCREEN. Any sugestions? I'd appreciate some help.

the actual video wont be full screen, but you should be able to undock and fill the screen with the video preview window ,with the toolbar across the top . Hmm, hard to explain , hope you understand what I am so poorly attempting to describe.

I've stretched the toolbar across the top. but the actual preview (the black rectangle) is 1/4 of the screen. I have a 21" and it's using a 4"X6" rectangle to preview. Is that about as big as it gets?

no ,it should be larger than that , probably need to change the monitors display settings , try 1024 x 768

Better!

Thank You

If you are using the 2nd monitor as an extension of your desktop then the preview window will never be larger than the current project frame size. For regular DV NTSC work this means a 654x480 window. If your resolution on that monitor is 1600x1200 then the preview will be about 1/3 of the screen dimensions. Lowering the resolution makes the preview window larger.

Newer releases of Vegas 6 allow you to use the 2nd monitor as an external display device. Under the Options menu you can specify which device to use for an external monitor. Your second video card output should be listed as a choice. If you select that then using the external monitor switch in the preview window will show the preview full screen on the 2nd monitor. Note that it will only be the video frame without all the accessory information around it. You will probably leave the preview window on your primary monitor when making use of this feature.

thank you

What the difference between 60hz and 75hz, (I know-15hz).
I have a choice between 1024x768(60hz) or 1024x768(75hz)

Higher refresh rates result in less flicker. Most monitors can handle very high refresh rates these days. Use the highest setting that works. If you try one that doesn't work, don't touch anything and Windows will revert to the previous setting after 15 seconds.

Kelly,
Using 6.0d. I remember the secondary monitor being added as a feature, but I've never been able to use it.

I have a Matrox G550 dual which works well for "normal" dual monitors - my right hand monitor is a Dell 24" LCD with heaps of space,

but, in Options / Preferences / Preview Device, when I select Windows secondary display I get the following messages:

Details - Device unavaliable
Display adapter - Did not detect multiple displays

Presumably something is not set right for this function - any ideas what's wrong?

Thanks

Peter

Thanks for the info

peter,
I know this sounds like an elmentary question and I apologize, but did you set the 'display property>settings>extend my windows desktop onto this monitor'? Did you drag your stuff across to the other side?

Jeffery? Talk about stretching to make the "Preview" fit? 2nd Monitor Preview isn't the same as "dragging" an expanded Preview Window TO a 2nd Monitor? I guess you know this? Yes?

But if you don't, and the flow of questions and answers is making me think this may be at the bottom of this, 2nd Monitor viewing is available IF you have a second monitor option from your PC. The Preview on the 2nd Monitor fills the screen; you don't get Toolbars and it is massive! I have this on my Video card.

Interesting . ..

Thanks Grazie,

2nd preview monitor is new to me. I have the 2nd monitor hooked up okay. I can see the cursor go from one screen to the other. In the options>prefences>preview device> Windows secondary display. No?
Where do I find the 2nd PREVIEW monitor option?

Options/Preferences/preview device Then enable Windows Secondary Display instead of the 1394 or None device that you've likely got set up now.
Scale Output to Fit Display
Use Color Management
Use Studio RGB
Recompress Edited Frames

Should all be enabled.

Nope Jefferey, it sounds like you got it. 2nd Monitor Option shows "Previewing" of the video you are working on.

Have you got it to fill your screen yet - well more than you had?

Thanks Spot, thanks Grazie,
I think when I get the new Video Card the earlier option you mentioned will kick in.
I have a Sony VAIO Desktop with integrated video and an ATi secondary card I found in one of my desk drawers from a few years ago (8MB RAM) which I thought would do the trick. But it (motherboard) only takes 2 GB of RAM where the MAC and a few other takes 16. I not contemplating MAC, I just know that's what they can use. I thinking of getting a new AMD Athlon 64 / X2 DUAL CORE SC939 ASUS A8N-SLI NVIDIA nForce®4 SLI™ 2xPCI-E X16,SATA,8-CH.AUDIO,IEEE1394,GIGABIT LAN
for $370 online. For that price I can afford a real nice Video card to go along with it.
Any suggestions for the secondary Video card?

Try to get one that has dual DVI outputs, assuming your monitors can handle DVI in, disable the video card on the mobo and drive both monitors from the new vid card.

Just be really careful of one trap that O've never figured out how to get out of. With the extended desktop if you move some windows in older apps and then remove the second monitor you cannot move those windows back to the primary display. Only thing I've had this issue with is PS 6, a re-install fixed the problem. Vegas is fine.

Well I don't know what I've done wrong ...

My dual Matrox is working fine, yet in Vegas Options / Preferences / Preview Device, when I select Windows secondary display :

Details - Device unavaliable
Display adapter - Did not detect multiple displays
- and the Scale, Apply and Use options are all greyed out.

Could it be related to Windows settings?
farss wrote on 4/16/2006, 6:26 PM
I think the Matrox cards don't support video overlays.
Chienworks wrote on 4/16/2006, 6:28 PM
Couldn't tell ya. I've had it work fine with a Matrox 450 (i think) dual head card, and also a system with Intel graphics on the motherboard and an ATI All-In-Wonder as the second display. On both systems it worked whether the desktop was extended across both monitors or not.
eyethoughtso wrote on 4/16/2006, 9:21 PM
That's what I have on my system now; Intel graphics on mobo and ATi secondary card. It works but I want to graduate from my VAIO to a more dedicated machine for editing. Boris Graffiti wouldn't work on my unit.

Thanks everybody let's open it up for everybody with a new posting on the Video card
