smooth playback of HD

I'm editing on a dell Presicion 650 dual 2G (533 FSB Hyperthreading: ON) Xeon, 1 GIG (dual channel) ddr RAM, U320 scsi system drive, RAID 0 for media. I'm importing the new HDV format .m2t files into the project set at widescreen DV specs. To preview from the clips I have no issues, but if I play from the time line it drops to 10 fps. At best I get 18-20 fps when playing the m2t file with a smaller preview window (preview auto, docked at the bottom). Before I had the raid and scsi, the frame rates were much lower (9-10 fps) do I need FASTER drives yet? How?

Is there anyway to enhance this? Or am I just stuck, whats my bottleneck? Why does the clip preview ply fine but not on the timeline?

You won't see full playback/framerate on any system right now. It's because MPEG2 isn't native to Vegas, and Vegas has to convert it to DV on the fly. Ulead just announced today that they'll have HDV capability by mid spring, and FCP just announced the same thing. If Vegas goes there, it will be a while, I'm sure.
