So now what do we use as an intermediate codec?

I mailed Cineform around the same time as the Vegas 9 annoucement, my question to them was regarding a 64bit version of their codec for Vegas 8.1 - they reply was that it would be fixed in Vegas 9. Now I see that in both the 32bit version and 64bit version there is no Cineform codec option at all. So what codec should one use to make intermediate versions of AVCHD material (or HDV for that matter).

Any ideas of a codec?

CIneform & SCS have both said (in the past few days) that they're aware of the problems and are working on a solution.

in the meantime, you could use PicVideo's MJPEG codec (cheap). It works fine on my machine in V9, and image quality when file sizes are about the size of Cineform are OK (you can control some of the compression parameters, unlike Cineform free codec included with older Vegas versions)

Avid's DNxHD codec is free and IMO as good as Cineform. Playback isn't quite as optimized in Vegas but the codec is rock solid.

DNxHD is a great codec! Only thing is that the free version (ok I am cheap... but that becuz soon we should have a proper intermediate codec) is that it is a Quicktime only codec. The quality is good - but last time I tried to render from Vegas with it - it was slow. Maybe I will try again with Vegas 9.

As for MJPEG codecs... the one that comes with FFDSHOW is decent as well.
