Written by idiots for idiots.........

That was a mature response - once again - go use Avid or FCP.

What part of Buh-Bye don't you understand? (My last response to this thread)

bob,
Rather than get in the middle of this "does it crash" discussion, I'll just write to say that my Vegas 8B has been crashing fairly regularly, especially when loading VV files created with 7 and VV 8A versions. I'm listing the error message below.

As for me, VV has been as rock steady as anything else I've used in the past, including FCP and particularly Avid, so I'd like to stay with Vegas for an upcoming job - just want to make sure I work out the crash stuff before I start the job!

One important other detail: I am working off new Lacie 550GB USB drives which were not in place before, although I have been careful to make sure files and folders are in the same place on the newer drives I'm using. That might be a factor, although I'm not sure.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.
Coty

CJ - so the question should be if you move the project to an internal drive - does Vegas still crash?

Lacie hasn't been known on these forums for being consistently reliable. I opted for Firewire laptop drives for editing on my laptop and haven't had a single issue with opening and rendering projects originally created in Vegas 7 on my single core Dell D400 laptop or my dual core AMD desktop on x64 XP Pro.

Remove the hardware out of the equation to see if it truly is Vegas or if it's the USB drive.

Cliff, thanks, I will relocate the avi files to my hard drive and see if VV 8 can open. One thing VV 8 has been doing is simply crashing before it opens - crashing my computer, which is a little bit scary. I'm not sure if it's my computer or the program - but I will click on Vegas and the screen will simply go black and then reboot.

CJ - this sounds like a hardware issue - if you're not getting a BSOD, then not sure what to tell ya.

I've had maybe a couple of BSOD's in the past 18 months and they had nothing to do with Vegas.

If you're comfortable doing this, you might want to shut your computer off, disconnect the power cord and make sure all your hardware is securely seated in their respective slots. Your symptoms almost sound like issues with RAM but I am only speculating.

Coon Ass aside...I look forward to 8C. BTW I started my carreer doing low budget and wedding like work on early vegas. If it werent for Vegas, I prob wouldnt be producing and editing tv commercials for Time Warner today. I'd like to thank Vegas, not FCP or Avid for helping me win 5 telly awards.. So dont knock a program that due to its user interface and pricing has enabled many young and inspired individuals to move into video as a carreer. I currently teach young kids from inner city neighborhood Vegas because its affordable and can be run on any cheap pc laptop. The hope is that the will some day be a professional and maybe even make a differnce in someone elses life as well. ANYWAY........where is 8c. I just installed xp64 bit on my laptop and it works great so far but Im a bit afraid to put xp 64 on my main workstation until perhaps 8c...I think that 8 was a GREAT improvement and will only continue to help migrate all the granola, tree hugging mac people over to the pc side. (not that theres anything wrong with granola or tree hugging...)
