softening interview jump cuts

I'm editing some interviews, and where I had cut out some dialog, I'd like to soften the cuts. A cross fade is just OK (at best), but I was thinking about maybe a horizontal Gaussian blur that's just enough to somewhat mask the cut.

Anyone have experience with this or any suggestions?

Camera was on tripod and crossfade apparently was your first choice, but turned out not quite satisfying, right?

Stay with the crossfade but zoom in a little on one clip. Do a slow zoom before or after the cut, just enough to give you two very different frames to crossfade between. You loose some pixels in the zoom, but for a steady well-lit shot it should not be a problem.
