SOLVED! First DVD Won't Burn! (HP200i)

OK...here we go...

The only two programs that have ever burned anything on my DVD drive has been Pinnnacle Studio 8 and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. That's it. Nothing else.

Knowing how many problems there are with Studio 8, I sought to get rid of all vestiges of anything Pinnacle. In shrt, once that was done, all worked perfectly.

This is what I did:

(I am certain that all of my DVD+RW disks, except maybe one, had Pinnacle Studio 8 content on them at least one time.)

Assuming Windows XP Pro and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum installed; HP200i drive.

1.) Right click and "format" the DVD+RW disk from Windows Explorer.
2.) Burn small sample DVD project from DVD Architect. It won't really be a successful burn, although DVD Architect says the burn was OK.
3.) At this point, DirectCD kicked in and started some formatting process that it says will last "1 to 4 minutes." Let it go.
4.) Right after this 1 to 4 minute process starts, CTRL-ALT-DEL and quit the DirectCD process.
5.) Reboot the machine. The DVD will be locked in its' format mode, but reboot anyway. You cannot remove the disk until after rebooting.
6.) Burn the project again from DVD Architect. This will be a successful burn, however, the format may not auto-play when inserted into the drive.
7.) Erase the DVD via another program. I used Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum.
8.) Again burn the project to the DVD from DVD Architect. This is a good burn, and the last one. All plays perfectly, auto-run works when inserted, etc.

I was subsequently able to erase the disk, copy data files to it, reburn the disk and all was perfect. In other words, the disk now worked like you would think it should, but I had to get rid of the Pinnacel Studio 8 stuff/format first.

As convoluted as this all may sound, this is the exact procedure I did to all of my DVD+RW disks (That had Pinnacle data on them at any time), and all works perfectly fine now. If the disk at any time ever contained Pinnacle Studio 8 content/was formatted by Studio 8, it would not burn successfully with DVD Architect. This little procedure made them all work perfectly. Surely you guys at Sonic Foundry could either make a little utility or a perhaps more streamlined procedure. This I know: What I said works, at least for me. It certainly looks like the concentration should be on previously existing disk content/format rather than the DVD Architect program itself.

I could then successfully burn a project to HP, Maxell, and Phillips DVD+RW media with data already on the disk or no data on the disk.

I do know that after Studio 8 burned a project to disk, it would start this "background formatting" process. I never determined what this was for. I could stop this background format and the DVD played fine. I usually let it go through its' paces though. Perhaps this is an issue. Once the disk was burned, I do not know why one would start a formatting process.

Simply, now, all works perfectly.

I will note:

With the DVD+RW disks in their previous state, I could not manually burn DVD content on to a disk and have it work. I would get a "disk format not recognized" error message. I *really* think there may be something with the "background format" evolution of Studio 8. It appears that it was a "format" problem.

Now that I "fixed" the disks as stated, I *can" manually burn previously generated Pinnacle Studio 8 content on to a disk and all works perfectly.

Summary: The Problem was Pinnacle Studio 8...which is why I'm now here with Sonic Foundry...

Thank you.

You know what, I too had S-S-S-Studio 8 and burned DVD-RW disks that later
would not work with DVD-A. I can't remember how I formatted the disks but they
work with DVD-A.

Perhaps the SoFo people can experiment by burning a DVD+RW with Studio 8 and then
try and burn the same disk with DVD-A.

I would do it myself ....BUT I DON'T WANT ANOTHER PINNACLE PRODUCT TO EVER TOUCH
MY COMPUTER AGAIN!!!

Welcome there are so many of us over here we ought to start a Pinnacle alumni association. I am wondering if some relative of P T Barnum is running Pinnacle this sucker got took. I bought dc10 then studio 7 then studio 8 delux with the card all the time thinking it was me. Then I bought vegas video 4 and dvd and burned two perfect dvd's the first two times I tried. Bye Bye Pinnacle.

I am glad that Pinnacle Studio 8 only cost me $159.00 (CAN)! Did you ever go into
the Studio 8 forums? Boy, talk about some angry people! The SoFo forums look like a
love-in by comparison! It's funny though, that's where I heard of Vegas for the first time.

I have Pinnacle Pro-One RTDV capture card. It works well! It came with a full copy of DVD Impression. I have not installed it yet. I have also DVD Architect. Again have not installed it yet. Waiting to get my Sony DRU500-AX.
Are you folks recommending not to install the Pinnacle DVD Impression and steer clear from it?

Pinnacle depression will make you crazy. Bit better than Minerva's version but not fun to use for sure. You'll get ffaster and more consistent results with humble Dazzle DVD Complete.

I would steer clear of anything Pinnacle.

I worked for MONTHS tweaking with Studio 8. I, and a lot of other people, had/have a LOT of problems.

I didn't just spring for Vegas+DVD for no reason, especially after buying Studio 8 Deluxe and all of the add-ins. I invested a lot of money in Pinnacle products.

In short, it's just not worth the trouble.

Since getting Vegas+DVD, I have actually been able to concentrate of building my projects...not worrying about getting Pinnacle products to work correctly.

Take a look at Pinnacle's Studio 8 message boards...a lot of people are very, very mad. Waaaay different than the boards here at Sonic Foundry.

I have been extremely pleased with Vegas+DVD.

It is a bit too late now since I paid for the Pro-one RTDV card :) But to be on the fair side - this card came with Premiere 6.5 and I never ran into problems with it. Although, I must say, that using the pinncale applications that came with it are problematic. So, I never use these.
However, I have always counted on Sonic Foundry products. A hallmark of stability and integrity. Too bad there is no plugin for the pro-one rtdv card to use inside Vegas for real time effects as is the case with the premiere plugin. I truly do not like Premiere. Sonic Foundry products are the ONLY products that never crash my PC.
