OK...here we go...
The only two programs that have ever burned anything on my DVD drive has been Pinnnacle Studio 8 and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. That's it. Nothing else.
Knowing how many problems there are with Studio 8, I sought to get rid of all vestiges of anything Pinnacle. In shrt, once that was done, all worked perfectly.
This is what I did:
(I am certain that all of my DVD+RW disks, except maybe one, had Pinnacle Studio 8 content on them at least one time.)
Assuming Windows XP Pro and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum installed; HP200i drive.
1.) Right click and "format" the DVD+RW disk from Windows Explorer.
2.) Burn small sample DVD project from DVD Architect. It won't really be a successful burn, although DVD Architect says the burn was OK.
3.) At this point, DirectCD kicked in and started some formatting process that it says will last "1 to 4 minutes." Let it go.
4.) Right after this 1 to 4 minute process starts, CTRL-ALT-DEL and quit the DirectCD process.
5.) Reboot the machine. The DVD will be locked in its' format mode, but reboot anyway. You cannot remove the disk until after rebooting.
6.) Burn the project again from DVD Architect. This will be a successful burn, however, the format may not auto-play when inserted into the drive.
7.) Erase the DVD via another program. I used Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum.
8.) Again burn the project to the DVD from DVD Architect. This is a good burn, and the last one. All plays perfectly, auto-run works when inserted, etc.
I was subsequently able to erase the disk, copy data files to it, reburn the disk and all was perfect. In other words, the disk now worked like you would think it should, but I had to get rid of the Pinnacel Studio 8 stuff/format first.
As convoluted as this all may sound, this is the exact procedure I did to all of my DVD+RW disks (That had Pinnacle data on them at any time), and all works perfectly fine now. If the disk at any time ever contained Pinnacle Studio 8 content/was formatted by Studio 8, it would not burn successfully with DVD Architect. This little procedure made them all work perfectly. Surely you guys at Sonic Foundry could either make a little utility or a perhaps more streamlined procedure. This I know: What I said works, at least for me. It certainly looks like the concentration should be on previously existing disk content/format rather than the DVD Architect program itself.
I could then successfully burn a project to HP, Maxell, and Phillips DVD+RW media with data already on the disk or no data on the disk.
I do know that after Studio 8 burned a project to disk, it would start this "background formatting" process. I never determined what this was for. I could stop this background format and the DVD played fine. I usually let it go through its' paces though. Perhaps this is an issue. Once the disk was burned, I do not know why one would start a formatting process.
Simply, now, all works perfectly.
I will note:
With the DVD+RW disks in their previous state, I could not manually burn DVD content on to a disk and have it work. I would get a "disk format not recognized" error message. I *really* think there may be something with the "background format" evolution of Studio 8. It appears that it was a "format" problem.
Now that I "fixed" the disks as stated, I *can" manually burn previously generated Pinnacle Studio 8 content on to a disk and all works perfectly.
Summary: The Problem was Pinnacle Studio 8...which is why I'm now here with Sonic Foundry...
Thank you.
