Some project files crash VP13 upon opening

Up until now VP 13 has worked fine opening all project files (.veg), however, recently just some .veg files freeze at X% and then cause VP13 to close or crash without an error message displayed making these project files unusable or recoverable.  I cleared the VP 13 cache upon startup and even tried opening the offending backup file (.bak) with the same results… freezing at X% and then closing.  I do not have VST plugins installed and I removed the NewBlue plugins to clear the problem without success.  I even uninstalled and reinstalled VP13 only to find the same .veg files not opening and crashing VP 13.  I am under a tight project timeline and really need help recovering these project files.

Vegas Pro 13 (build 453) 64-bit on Windows 10.  i7-3770 @3.4GHz with 12GB RAM.  msi Radeon R9 380 Gaming 4G graphics card.  Clips are MP4 1080/30P with multi-camera.

Sounds like Vegas is crashing on a certain source file. Here's a suggestion for that possibility.

>>Rename your source files one by one, don't let Vegas look for missing files, until the project opens. Then see what is wrong with the culprit.

Thanks for your quick response. After renaming all of my project media and attempting to open the .veg file, I again get the same result... freezing at X% and then closing. I did not get to the point where Vegas asks for missing files. Is there a log file I can pull to help determine the hangup?

Two questions: Can you open other Veg files ok ? .. Did you try opening the file in question in VP12 ?

One other possible is to search for a .restored.veg or .autosave.veg.bak file here: C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Sony\Vegas Pro\13.0

I can open other .veg files ok, while not being able to open others. And I also cannot open the offending .veg files on VP12. My computer did not have any recent .restored.veg or .autosave.veg.bak files. I opened the ones and they are not the ones I am looking for.

Nick... Thanks for the instructions. I was able to determine from section 12 that "C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 13.0\OFX Video Plug-Ins\Vfx1.ofx.bundle" was causing the hangup. After opening the problematic .veg file with the relocated Vfx1.ofx.bundle folder, SVP13 warned me the plug-in(s) specified are not installed on this system. The warning details showed the following:

{Svfx:com.sonycreativesoftware:brightnessandcontrast}
{Svfx:com.sonycreativesoftware:brightnessandcontrast}
{Svfx:com.sonycreativesoftware:chromakeyer}
{Svfx:com.sonycreativesoftware:brightnessandcontrast}

{Svfx:com.sonycreativesoftware:brightnessandcontrast}

I also noted another post entitled "BUG:DEFOCUS FX crashes VP14 down to SVP13 and SVP12" which states that defocus was causing crashing with certain AMD graphic cards. I have the R9 380 Gaming 4G card running version 17.1.1. So I turned off my "GPU acceleration of video Processing" under Options/Preferences and the Video tab. This allowed me to reuse the Vfx1.ofx.bundle within the OFX Video Plug-Ins folder and I was back up running with my original .veg file.

It looks like you have 1 instance of the Defocus FX, and this is what is causing the problem with the 17.1.1 driver. If you check out my summary on that other thread, you can see that you would probably be able to solve this by rolling back to the 16.9.2 driver, and then you should be able to use GPU acceleration again. But kinvermark had no crash with 16.10.1 and john_dennis had no cash with 16.12.2. Personally I would try 16.12.2 first, which was the last version 16 driver. Old AMD drivers for Windows 10 x64 can be found here. If you roll back, the AMD Clean Uninstall Utility is here, or there's a 3rd party uninstaller which might be even more thorough.
