Thanks Bob! There isn't anything to beat having the lessons "nailed-home" by another chap .. great! .. One itsy bitsy thing Pieter says . . unless I miss heard him .. on using Auto to get the actual settings, then switching back to manual .. what he says, I think, is switching back to Auto . . but hey what do I know? However this could throw a newbie . .
Kool, I wish I had attended these seminars ..
As I said, nothing wrong having the lessons learnt nailed-home by a top pro. Kinda makes me feel I'm in the right Ball PArk with what I do .. I HIGHLY recoomend that everybody gets to these files and studies them - if nothing else to get a another feel for framing. Yes?
No I think he means to switch back to manual.
You use the smarts in the camera to set focus and exposure on what you want, then you switch to manual so the camera holds those settings.
Say you're setting up a pan that ends on a subject, you want that in focus and the correct exposure. So you set the camera on them in auto, switch to manual and then do the pan, when you reach the subject, presto it's in focus and correctly exposed, what you avoid is the camera hunting during the pan.
I think the best point he's making it that section is 'don't be afraid of black'. Must say I'd never given that much thought and tended to shy away from it, sort of a subconcious aversion as we don't see it in much in commercial video.
Bob.
Yes , Bob, that is exactly what I do .. please check it out ..

00:00:25 "put it in automatic . .. . "
00:00:30 "put it back into auto and close it down a little bit" . . er . .. well you can't close something down in auto. That was my only point. Are you contradicting me when I say this with your "No" or are you saying he is incorrect? Look, either way we know what he meant - but maybe a newbie will get confused.
The blacks are one of the essential bits of composition and getting what can be a startling picture from an average on. This he explains very well.
Just looking at Craig Wilsons editing tips... Fascinating stuff.... Watch the rehearsal... The camera angles... The Finished edit... As well as all the other tips... Doesnt matter to me that I might know this stuff.. Its great to see what you do Know being played out... Plus a few bits that jog / didnt know..
Thanks for the Link...
Excellent stuff. For years I've been an advocate of not being afraid of black, exposing for the highlights and letting the rest of the image take care of itself.
Guess it would have carried more weight if I had "ASC" after my name.
