Somewhat OT: THE GOP IS REAL!

Heh heh... I have heard about HDV's long GOP, but always thought, "Yeah, yeah."
Well, I had my first HDV dropout today and guess how long it lasted; EXACTLY 15 frames. From the first frame of the mess to the frame it was clean, it was perfectly what I was told it would be.
This info doesn't really help anybody in any way, I admit. I just thought it was interesting in two ways: one is that I've shot probably 30 hours of HDV now and this is my first drop out. And second; always believe people like Spot - he's rarely wrong (Sir. Douglas is the guy from whom I got my HDV cert ;-)

Curious: what kind of DV tape were you using? The $13 63-minute Sony, or some other tape?

Yes, the Sony DigitalMaster 63 min tape in HDV. Shot on a Sony Z1u.

I admit: I have a couple of scratch tapes I use over and over with my FX1. Nothing important, though, mainly experimenting.

Edited: by the way, I've never had a dropout.

If you compare that to the number of dropouts on just about every DV tape you'll realise how much better HDV is. Of course when you do get a HDV dropout it 's invariably worse than the run of the mill hiccups on DV.

It MIGHT be worthwhile trying to recapture that bit of the tape, it's quite possibly due to a transient head clog.

I'd follow Bob's rec' as well. It might be just a dust mite on the head. Interesting it's a full 15 frames too...It's possible to have a smaller dropout, depending on where in the GOP the error falls.

It was on a never-before-used tape. Fortunately I never shoot anything just once (which is why I HATE event videography - I leave that to Real Men). I had a back up take to choose from.

It only makes sense, if the dropout occurs on an I frame, that will mess up the whole GOP. if it occurs later on in the GOP, the effects will not be as drastic.
