Clean your tape heads first before you try it. I have been using Panasonic PQ for both mini and full size DV tapes both in my VX2000 camera and my WV-DR9 editing deck. The full size 186 min. PQ tapes are around the same price as those Sonys.

I've always used Sony brand tape, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

After reading all the details, I guess when you're shooting, in the overall scheme of things, the cost of tape is a minor expense. However, if one were to use cheap tape, it could cause a major expense if there tape problems.

I'll probably step up to the DigitalMaster and pass the few dollars increase on to the client.

Don't use cheap tape! Many of the black Sony miniDV 60s I recorded in 1999 have developed horrendous drop outs, despite being stored in 65 -75 degrees at probably 35% humidity. The DVCAM PDVM-40Ns I used five years ago are still okay. You pay more up front for pro grade tape but it's worth it. That digital mastering line sounds good but I am happy with the PDVM grade.

Just be careful, tapes from the same manufacturer can use differernt lubricants (wet/dry) causeing head gummies. Always clean head when changing unless you've only used a few tapes in the drive.
