The most obvious difference is that Flip only shoots 720 vertical resolution, whereas th HDR-CX100 shoots a full 1080.

Interesting... given the specs on the cameras one would guess there would be a visible difference.

A couple thoughts:
- Many cameras allow recording at different quality levels. Is it possible the Sony has been set to a lower quality level?
- Maybe the mode of playback is skewing things. Are you simply viewing things on your computer? On a DVD?
- If you'd be willing to put together a comparison video, where you shoot the same thing with both cameras, I'm sure some of us would take a look and offer an opinion.

I don't have a Flip Video, but a quick Google search seems to indicate that it does not have image stabilization nor optical zoom. Depending on how you plan to use the camera, this could be a problem - maybe a bigger problem than the 720 vs 1080 comparison of resolution.

Try to compare the two in different conditions. Compare them outside in bright sunlight, inside under normal room lighting. Record scenes with a lot of motion. Zoom in and out. Compare the audio quality of someone speaking close up and far away.

Video some printed text and see if you can make it out on the final video,

Hold the camera above your head or close to the ground and record something(CX100 will win here due to its swivel screen)

I have the CX100 and I really like it. I suspect that it will come out ahead on most of the above. The CX100 is far from perfect, but for someone on a budget like me it is great.

Thanks guys for the replies. Will follow your advice here and get back with you on my findings. And maybe some comparisons if I find there is no difference. My above statements were my initial reactions and maybe I haven't used it enough.

Maybe I missed it but did you say HOW you are viewing the two videos?

On the camcorders screen?
On your computer?
On a flat screen TV?
