Use the utility software that comes with the camera to copy the video files to your hard disk. Download Vegas update V7e, install it, and then you can edit the m2ts files on the Vegas timeline.

Is that the only way to do it? Isn't there a way to capture the video through Sony Vegas. My other problem is that I created a finished product and I want to transfer back onto my HDR-SR1. How do I do that? I saved my finished product as an AVI. I made a copy of the AVI and transfered it over to the folder where my AVCHD files from my camcorder are saved on my computer. I then opened the software that came with my HDR-SR1 to see if I can somehow do it that way but it didn't even see the AVI file that I created in Sony Vegas. Man! This is a Sony camcorder. It shouldn't be this difficult!
The Sony HDR-SR1 connects using a USB cable. I also have an older Sony Hi8 camcorder that connects using fire wire. When I connect the Hi8 camcoder, Vegas has no problem finding that camcorder. Sure I can copy the finished AVI onto that camcoder but I want to be able to copy it back onto my HDR-SR1. Man! I am soooo frustrated! If there is anyone out there that can help me out, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks,
Otto

This was just covered in this thread:

Vegas does not see HDV device

To keep you from having to read the whole thread, try reading this post first:

Eventually figured it out

The SR1 is a hard drive and hard drives tend not to "capture" like normal firewire cams. Once you connect to the computer, it is seen simply as another hard drive that you copy files to and from.

The SR-1 is an AVCHD camera, a fairly new HD format.

The description of our level of AVCHD support in Vegas 7.0e is:

"Edit files from Sony AVCHD camcorders."

To set expectations:

1) You cannot "capture" the footage recorded on the camera like you would with DV, or HDV, from within Vegas itself.

There is no import-from-camera mechanism built into Vegas 7.0e

You will need to import the files from the camera (which Windows will see as a mass storage device) after using the utility that came with the camera.

2) Only files from Sony AVCHD cameras will work in Vegas 7.0e at this time.

3) There is no write back-to-camera functionality in Vegas 7.0e.

We are looking into further extending our AVCHD support in the future and besides the above we'd welcome any other AVCHD feature requests you care to share.

You have a hard disk camera, why do you want to capture? Just copy the files, because this is one of the advantages of using a hard disk camera in the first place.

As far as copying back to the camera after editing is concerned, this is just another gap in the workflow that existed as soon as this camera was released. For me, it's much lower priority than editing support, but if you need it then I suggest you better make some noise and try to make sure Sony provide it sooner rather than later.

I used to think that Sony were deficient in releasing such cameras without proper support, but now it dawns on me that it is we who are stupid for buying them. Wonder if we will ever learn? (In my defence, my company bought 2 of these cams, against my advice).

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a related quesiton.

I don't have a SR1, but I had a question from someone looking to get one.

I understand you can't output back to the camcorder, but does Vegas support rendering back out to AVCHD at all? I couldn't find a reference to it in the manual, or a template.

The idea being that AVCHD discs play on a PS3 etc.... So someone might want to edit and render back out in AVCHD format. Is this possible?

i have HDR-SR1 since last year and frustrated that its not compatible with FC (Mac) and even Vegas. I was forced to buy canopus to capture videos.

I Finally able to edit in Vegas after the recent update.

Again... it's a hard drive... you don't "output" back to the cam.

For all intents and purposes, XP will see the SR1 as it would ANY OTHER run of the mill external USB harddrives. You don't capture from it or write back to it. You COPY files to and from it, just like you would C to D.... or E to F.

If you can find a file format that the SR1 can accept and read... then it's simply a matter of rendering to that format and then copying to the SR1. The question of course is what file formats can the SR1 read? Is it restricted only to AVCHD?

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. As I said I know that you can't write back to the SR1 HDD, and that's not what I am asking.

I am asking if it is possible to render out on the PC in AVCHD format - to put on a DVD which can be played on a PS3 or other.

In other words:

1. I know you can edit AVCHD now with Vegas
2. I know you can play AVCHD files from DVD on a PS3 or Sony Blu-ray player

My question is can you edit and render to AVCHD in Vegas?

I noticed that when you use the Sony utility to transfer an m2ts file, there is a small file created as well, presumably with some important data that is related to the video file. When I tried to use the Elecard converter program on a straight file copy (i.e. without the additoinal data file) it just hung, but if I transferred using the utility the Elecard program worked fine.
