The tape mechanism on the Z1U is very delicate. Does the door open by itself? It does take a few seconds. Make sure the battery is not dead.

don't knock it (pun intended) - i've had this work not only on dv/hdv tapes, but also on beta/betasp tapes. if it does not work, then it's a tech job for sure...
