Sony project archive problem

I am trying to trim/archive a project from a large amount of footage down to what's being used on the timeline. My problem: Many of the clips (HDV footage from a Z1) are being saved in their original entirety even though I am choosing save as>copy media with project>create trimmed copies of source media.

This makes this "feature" pretty much useless to me since a clip that should be a few hundred megs ends up being 6+ gigs. Any ideas on what's causing this? I will report it to Sony but I don't have much hope since I've been trying to get them to fix the Cineform bug introduced in ver. 9 for a while now. This bug prevents you from archiving any projects when Cineform is on the timeline. I don't think enough users use this archive feature to make it a priority to them.

Thanks, Marc

Unfortunately many video formats do not support trimming. I would assume (but don't know for sure) this would include all highly compressed formats like HDV and AVCHD.

Consequently, my solution for archiving has been to buy lots of hard drives and a removable drive caddy.

What you are talking about is not really archiving at all. It is called "destructive editing."

It's easy enough to render your edited clips to new tracks, delete the full clips from the timeline and project media, and save the project with the edited media.

If you want an easy trim/split/join app, try VideoRedo. It takes care of the GOP indexing on the fly.

It's not easy when you have lots of clips with transitions etc. It's a PIA.

I see. I guess I never noticed it because Cineform was working in V8 and I was mostly using that. It seems like a script could be written to render new clips out based on their edits and then place them on the timeline as new takes.

HDV and Cineform clips seem to trim fine with the Save As copy media option. MP4 does not so it saves the entire clip. I had never noticed this before, but I did not start using a lot of MP4 stuff until recently with POV and crash cams.

I am using VP9.0e. 64.

Long-GOP structures do not "trim" as one would wish using this function. It seems to be an indexing consideration, noting that a typical AVC GOP can be several hundred frames in length.

VideoRedo and Womble both take care of the re-indexing problem, effectively. I guess I never expected Vegas to do this kind of work, but it is a good suggestion for the future.

HDV and Cineform clips seem to trim fine with the Save As copy media option.

I just tried this with a 20 sec. camera HDV clip edited to 10 sec. It saved the whole clip. Perhaps I need to use a longer test.

When you get to the "Copy Media Options" choose "Create trimmed copies of source media". You should get an error if Cineform is being used. Sony has reproduced this bug in house.

Worked fine for me.

Hmmmm... that's strange as I've reproed this on multiple systems and others have reported the same problem including Sony's confirming the issue. Can you confirm that you are following this sequence with cineform clips on the timeline?

save as > copy media with project > create trimmed copies of source media. Project setting 1920x1080 60i. Can you also tell me what version of Cineform your using?

Thanks, Marc
