SONY'S SOLUTION TO MY HD SETTINGS PROBLEM-LOVE IT!

YOU'ALL LOVE THIS

Hi Burt,

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software. This has been identified as a bug by our development team and will be address in a future version of the Vegas pro software. As a workaround for now if you need preview during hdv capture, use Vegas Pro 8.0 on a 32 bit system or HDV Split. If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident.

Sincerely,

Kevin K.

OK, there's a bug, they've identified and acknowledged it and provided a temporary solution. Your comment seemed a little sarcastic, what other response from SCS would you have preferred?

I agree John - The workarounds seem quite reasonable to say the least.

The never ending negativity around entitlement for Vegas to be "Perfect" software is trying to say the least.

I use HDVSplit and find the only impact on my tape based workflow has been a positive one.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - if you don't like Vegas, find another NLE.

I would have preferred "Hey, Burt, thanks for the info. We're sending you out the patch you need now!!

I think you've done remarkably well. You have been given a viable workaround. Any software vendor even vaguely worth doing business with has a protracted testing process in place that must be followed before any code is released into the wild even as an alpha.
Fixing one problem is oftenly easy enough. Making certain you haven't broken 5 other things in the process is not so easy.

jazzmaster, I work for a software company and have worked in the software industry for over 20 years.

When a user reports a bug, we try to find a work-around solution. Looks like Sony did too.

The bug is then brought up in our weekly dev meetings. We then determine the criticality of the bug. Are all our users dead inthe water until we issue a patch?, 50%, 10%, not many?

It can cost a lot of money to roll a new version of software. So you do what you can to make sure you got all the bugs addressed you can and any new features you want in the product. Once it is out, you start over again.

Sony got you a work-around, it is a pretty sure bet they are rolling the bug fix into a next release and will not be doing a "panic" release of code that is not ready to go. Panic releases seldom go well, unless they are planned events.

Typically a software company will be ready to do a quick turn around on any critical bug found soon after a release. After a few days, if nothing shows up from the field, then all bets are off and they are back to the regular dev cycle.

Not saying this is what happens at Sony as I have no insight into their dev cycle design, but it would not surprise if it did. It is a time proven model for software development.

I really don't see what the complaint is.

There was a problem and you contacted Sony. They got back to you and stated it was a bug and they would address it. They then gave you a work around in the meantime.

ALL software has bugs... what makes the difference is what they do about it. You want to get depressed over something like this.... go to Avid... it takes them a life time just to get back to you, another lifetime to acknowledge the problem, and then 3 more lifetimes in issuing a patch. It's what brought me over here. Sony is MUCH, MUCH faster!

na... i would have expected a sony a gift voucher to exchange for, at least, a ex1....

OK, OK, I give up. I will write "I love Sony" on my facebook page 150 times and try to be more patient. What I learned is that instead of fooling around with something for hours, it's better to contact Sony right off the bat. I've been here since Vegas 3 and so I'm obviously very happy.

150 times seems a little excessive, perhaps 50 would be adequate. :)

what!!! 50 times with cut 'n' paste? ;-P

I prefer HDVsplit anyway... I don't need to run vegas to capture a tape, I can use a program with a smaller footprint. I wish Vegas's HD capture was a separate app like VidCap.

What is HDVSplit? Is that where you halve the monitor window? Is there a special HD thing there? Somebody please enlighten me.
Thanks

HDVsplit is a free, stand-alone HDV capture utility. It is available here:

Maybe some of you should give this remark a rest. You use it selectively. It is never directed at the veterans who complain about the software, only to the relative newcomers to this forum.

Bottom line - "Love it or leave it" is not patriotic.

HDV split works perfectly. I have been using it for a couple of years and have never had a problem.

If you're wanting to preview with HDVSplit then beware of the version of the MainConcept MPEG video decoder on your machine. Here's something I wrote on HDVSplit threads here and here.

>> I finally noticed that the MainConcept MPEG Video Decoder version on my new (crashing) laptop was only at 1.0.0.38, with its mcdmpeg.ax sitting in C:\WINDOWS\system32\, whereas on my older (non-crashing) desktop it was at version 1.0.0.73 and sitting in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG\ (note the (x86) partt is because I'm running XP x64).

Having said all that I recall I still had a little instability and so now I run HDVSplit with no preview and just watch it on the camera's screen.
