sot. best codec for editing in win movie maker?

i know, i know.....

one of the groups of high school kids i've just taken on only have access to some p4 3ghz pc's and only running movie maker till i can prove them worthy of better.

they've got a mixture of dv and some newer avchd dinky camcorders. would i be better off transferring the lot to wmv of some description so they can actual edit in near realtime?

end result will probably be dvd - though quality ISN'T a major issue here!

thanks

College students are bad enough but high school?
My sympathies :-(

In all seriousness, DV-AVI will work quite well on those machines.
And yes, I've "been there, done that" with WMM and a P4 3.2 GHz.

hi mike!

how's win7? enjoying?

actually i now prefer high school kids to those i used to teach at uni - not only are they more receptive to ideas, they (in general) are less wannabes and more ready to collaborate with one another.... and they need very little direction - i point them to tute's on youtube and off they go.

i thought dv would be ok, but what about the avchd - to dv or wmv, and if so, what settings would be best?

had the stove going for the last week or so - frost regularly in the morning, t-shirt by lunchtime....

thanks,

leslie, I'm ashamed to admit it but Win 7 is still sitting unopened on my desk, yet to be installed :-(
It's on my to-do list but my wife keeps knocking it off with her projects :-)

What's the make/model of the camcorder?
Does it have an option to play out in SD format?

April showers (lots of them) have turned into May torrential downpours and we're still patiently waiting for a nice weekend (the upcoming one promises rain - again !!).
The pool is open and the kids have been swimming but I'm not turning the heater on until the temps climb above +20 (Celsius, that is) for more than 2 days in a row.

then you'll be in for a pleasant surprise when you do finally get round to installing it!

i don't know the camera models (though i have a horrible feeling there's a couple of jvc outputing .mod files in the bunch). and i'm pretty sure none have any 'output' conversion, though i might be wrong on that point.

you're using celsius? i thought you were still imperial (fahrenheit, etc.,) over there?

JVC's .mod files are actually mpg files in disguise so they're not a problem.

Yes, Canada joined the metric world at least 20 years ago.
The USA was supposed to follow but never did.
Makes life interesting for the provincial highway traffic cops.
American: Officer, why the ticket? I was only doing 100.
Officer: Sir/Ma'am, 100 mph = 160 Kph (our highway speed limit is 100 kph) = REALLY big fine.

I've had some very interesting conversations with online friends in England. I'll convert things to metric before i write my message to them, as in "it's hot here! 36°C", or "my living room is about 3 x 5 metres", or "we got 2cm of rain last night." I figured i was doing a favor, saving them from having to do the math themselves. Yet, a surprising number of my English friends will then respond "36? that's almost freezing" and "huh? what's that in feet and inches?"

I have very similar experiences with most of my Canadian friends too.

So it seems that even though those countries are officially metric, their inhabitants aren't necessarily on board yet.

it seems it depends who you're talking to. we old farts (50+) remember both so try to look as if we know what were talking about by 'double' checking what we think we're talking about ;-)

I would let Windows Movie Maker convert it all to high bitrate Window Media files. That is what it likes to play with. It will import files and it will also capture from a number of devices.

BTW, all of my edit stations (14) are P4 3.0ghtz. We run Vegas 9.0 and it does a fine job on the old hardware.

thanks kk - i'll bear that in mind.

got the material off the dv tapes with no problem (well, huge gaps between takes - but that's to be expected with kids playing back what they record!).

the jvc .mod files are as mike pointed out. simply rewrapped mpg, but mm2 wont take them in, so i used super to convert to dv.xvi. i've still gopt them on an ex hd, so i'll transcode to wmv as suggested and see if they run any smoother in the old pc's....

thanks
