Check the Auto Lock slider switch (which the LCD screen covers when it is closed). The switch needs to be in the "off " position to allow manual shutter speed.

I have an HC1..

Do you have one of the ProgramAE functions, besides auto, selected? that greys it out for me.

auto lock is off.

Program AE is on auto.

Thanks for the suggestions, I still can't figure it out.

You haven't accidently turned nightshot on? With the lens cover closed the telltale green background around the menu won't show...

No nightshot. Ralph- do you have an A1? What are your settings? I must have something on/off that needs to be switched to the opposite of what I have it for me to have control over the shutter speed.

I do have an A1, I'll email you.

I found the answer here and it worked.

(my problem was that I had the manual exposure on, which I should be able to have on, but due to this issue it would not allow me to switch the speed of the shutter).

It is a bug apparently.

Good reference will have to file it for future frustration fixit.

one more try..

Are you in a Cineframe mode? Mine has a cinematic mode & greys out shutter speed.

I see it's been resolved. you guys are fast!
jrazz wrote on 8/11/2007, 2:30 PM
I don't use Cineframe on the camera. Thanks for the suggestion but the problem has been solved (see above).

You can turn manual exposure back on, once you've picked the desired shutter speed. Not sure I'd call that a bug, more like an annoyance.
jrazz wrote on 8/11/2007, 5:02 PM
As far as I can tell, there should be no reason why you should have to turn it off and then back on. It is mentioned no where in the manual and it is counter-intuitive. In my book, this is a bug.

Well, if you're going to define "bug" as an idiotic implementation of a feature, like many of the features in the A1U, then I would tend to agree with the term.
