If you don't have the stamina then why are you playing with an operating system that hasn't even been released yet?

a. because at least the operating system has a huge beta-test base, (which is more than can be said of vegas!) along with quite a number of very informative and helpful boards (which can also be said of vegas!).
b. i want to use 64 bit vegas, and xp is too old, and vista, well enough said....
c. and the subject covers ALL software, os, vegas updates, etc.,

They have until October 22nd to work the bugs out.

if you haven't noticed, win 7 rtm is out and about. now whether they're going to recall all those copies because of a bug is another matter. either way i have been running win 7 / xp pro dual booted on my new pc without problems until the lan episode.

either way, i have found win 7 / 64 a delight to use, and as i wrote, this is my first problem with it - which is more than can be said of my little, but traumatic experiences with vista....

I didn't update my last computer for its entire 5+ year existence. No Windows security updates, no application updates: nothing.

I also don't install new software unless I absolutely need it. I have a laptop, which I often restore from an image, which I use to test new things.

As a result, I NEVER have problems with crashes, unexplained weirdness, things that worked yesterday that don't work today, slowdowns, etc. I DO work on client computers all the time, and I see what has become of them thanks to half a dozen programs constantly updating themselves in the background.

Pathetic performance, instability, etc.

I also don't update Vegas anymore. I use 7.0d every day and it works fantastically well. I had a license for 8.0 when it first cam out, but didn't install it until this past spring (8.0c). I only use it for AVCHD, and when I use that format, I convert to an intermediate and then continue editing in 7.0d.

As for 8.1, I spent a LOT of money when I bought my new computer in January to get a dual boot computer, with Vista 64 bit, just so I could run 8.1. I had a horrible time: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=638824}8.1

When 9.0 came out, I was all set to try it, especially after the initial glowing reports. Fortunately, I didn't open my wallet, nor did I waste any time downloading and trying it. Based on what I've read the past 24 hours, I am still not tempted. Fortunately, my workflow doesn't require any of the features in 9.x.

So, in general, I agree with ushere that I have gotten quite conservative (reactionary) when it comes to upgrades, and not just those from SCS.

It is sad to see what has happened to my old industry, but whatever the reason, most companies seem to have fallen into this careless, lackluster pattern.

Of course there is iZotope, a wonderful exception to this trend: stable, good updates, people you can still get hold of. I think the folks at Cineform may also be in this same camp. Small is certainly part of the reason they are better, but I also think it starts at the top.

So, turn off ALL automatic updates, and never upgrade software unless you have a very specific, show-stopper reason to do so.

That is very wise, John.
The best situation is of course if you can have a separate PC for only editing that you don't mess arround with. I have that and an old P4 3.0 for test purposes, where I install all kind of programs recommended here and other places. I have an image that I restore in minutes to go back to scratch.
