Sound

I just purchased a new system (mild nightmare), and they didn't include a "good" sound card.
I mainly do :30 cable commercials, industrial videos, How-To videos and the ilk. Someday I may mix 5.1, but that's not today.
Is there a card that is more recommended than others - one that might take me into the future but not break my wallet?
Or am I ok with going out of the existing sound card in to my Mackie 1402 and out of that into some modestly good studio speakers?

I'm really picky when it comes to audio but have been delighted with the E-Mu 1820M. It's not cheap so falls into your "might take me into the future" category. Multi-channel I/O up to 192kHz. The fidelity is outstanding.

My only complaint is that the breakout box gets too warm. Talk about a nit-pick!

I've never heard anyone say a single thing bad about an Echo MiaMidi. I have one, it's been absolutely sterling, great sound quality, 24/96, 1/4" inputs, S/PDIF in/out, rock solid drivers. At about $125 it's easy on the wallet, and should play very nicely with both Vegas and your Mackie.

Thanks very much. The Echo MiaMidi sounds like a good deal for my needs. Since I don't do music myself (just stock libraries), anything too fancy is a waste of money and resourses.
Thanks again!

If you are not doing recording, M-Audio has the Revolution for about $100.

M Audio Firewire 410 here, very easy to swap from PC to PC or use in the field.
