Sound Cutting Out With Multiple Audio Tracks.

Genious wrote on 9/17/2019, 12:08 AM

I wasn't sure whether to put this in Vegas audio or Vegas video but, as it's an audio problem, I assumed it was here. Apologies if I messed this up.

I use an old version of Vegas Pro (13 to be exact) and I never had a problem with previous versions and not even sure if the problem started with 13 or a little while later. Basically I can have 4 or 5 audio tracks that run smoothly in 5.1 surround, but when I start adding more tracks, the audio on various tracks begins cutting out. I have plenty of RAM (12 GB) and my system should be able to handle it as I also run Studio One audio software with no problem whatsoever. I've tried using wav files as well as mp3 but either way, I keep running into this problem.. I'm wondering if there is some setting I have wrong. I've searched through here but not really finding anything. Thanks for any info or advice anyone can give.

What are your audio settings in 'Project Properties'?
How many audio tracks.. and events that play at the same time?
Are any plug-ins being used? If so, what and where?
What is the sample rate of the PCM files, are they poly files and where did they originate from?
Does the same behavior happen in the 'Project Properties' stereo mode?

12 GB of RAM ain't "plenty" for a NLE, but should be adequate for many audio-only scenarios.

I thought you might have solved my problem right away because I got noticing that the sample rate was set at 48,000 instead of 44,100 but I started a project over with the setting I always used to use and still has the same problem.

I have the audio settings for 5.1, 44,100, Bit depth: 16, Resample and stretch quality: Good and the Enable low pass filter: 120 Dolby

I have about 12 tracks that all came from a Studio One DAW that I use to do tracking and I do all plug ins there so that I can keep it clean in Vegas Pro

I do have the same problem with doing just stereo which I honestly hadn't even tried that for some reason.

And the only reason I think of 12 gb as being plenty is that I used to work on a machine that had 8 without problems, including video and my DAW runs with up to 24+ tracks without issues, including quite a few plugins.

Thanks for the reply by the way. I feel like it's some random weird little thing that I'm just not seeing.

Normally, Vegas does not have problems with different sample rates and bit depths, even if the files/events are on the same track. However if all or most of the files are 44.1k, I would set the project's properties the same (Files> Properties> Audio). Just render the final mix to 48k if it's for video.

"I have about 12 tracks that all came from a Studio One DAW"
- How are you importing the audio from Studio One? I occasionally need to import a project timeline and files from other DAWs and NLEs. Vegas usually give me problems directly importing AAC. OMF still works though, using a third-party converter like AATranslator. I am not familiar with Studio One and it's export options.

Can you post one of the track files? The file's metadata and other attributes may give us a clue.

Have you tried other PCM files? (from a portable recorder for instance).

Your could also try copying the files and re-saving in Sound Forge or another editor/DAW to see if that makes a difference.

Version 6.3 or later of AATranslator will allow you to convert directly from Studio One to Vegas

I usually export stems in wav format but have even tried mp3 and then just drag them into the bottom area where tracks are in Vegas Pro. I'm unfortunately away from home - and my Vegas Pro at the moment which makes it difficult to specify stuff but I'll know more when I'm back

For 5.1, best to use 48khz vs 44.1, as that is the sample rate that DVD and Blu-Ray use (BD can also use 24 bit 96khz, as can DVD for stereo WAV, but that's another topic). You'll have to re-convert the files to burn them to disc if you want them to adhere to the DVD or BD spec.

I've got the same problems here with Vegas and any level of audio complexity specifically surround + third party audio plugins. It's especially bad with ASIO, changing to computer sound cards helps somewhat but it's been a problem for some time.

I took 13 off and went back and installed 9 and it works perfectly - lots of tracks, with a video track, lots of automation and a few plug ins (usually reverb/compression/eq). The funny thing is that, when I was playing around with the audio settings, I found a buffer setting that I don't think I had noticed when I had 13 installed. So I'm thinking of going back and re-installing and making sure I didn't have that set too far in the wrong direction. If I did, then it's exactly as I thought and just some stupid little setting that I was overlooking. I can post what it is specifically when I'm back home tomorrow

Audio buffer settings certainly can have an affect.

In one of my dopier moments - that lasted a long time - it was exactly that. I kept going into the audio settings but never to the point of checking the buffer size and it ended up being exactly as I predicted: some stupid little thing that I kept missing. And the funny thing is that I didn't even notice it until I went back to Vegas 9 and saw it. So I put 13 back on. Unfortunately my ShuttlePro isn't being recognized anymore but I'm not that concerned. I'm sure it's just... some... stupid... little... thing... I... keep... missing.
