Sound Degradation after Render

When I render a video project to MPEG2 or MPEG2 I get a significant degradation in sound quality. When I listen to my video edit in the timeline of Vegas Movie Studio 6 it sounds fine, but after rendering there is a very slight background noise on the MPEG, like a faint high pitched sound which does not appear in the original clips, or in the timeline video preview prior to rendering. What is the problem and how can I get rid of it ?

What are your audio settings for the MPEG2. If they are lower than in your source media, then there will be a loss in quality.

They are all at the top setting - if I make an MP3 instead of an MPEG the sound is fine, although the MP3 compression doesnt appear to be superior.
