specific info for the .avi files opened in Vegas 4

When I try and open a .avi file in Vegas 4 on my new machine running Windows XP Vegas generates a message that reads "Video: stream attributes could not be determined". The audio portion of the .avi file opens on the Vegas timeline. The video portion on the timeline is all black if anything.
I did a test and took a disc to my friends house to try on his machine. His machine is running Vegas 4.0 and Windows XP. The .avi files on my disc did the same thing "Video: stream attributes could not be determined"
Any ideas as to what is going on? All of my .avi files work just fine on my Machine running Windows Me. Thanks-Scott

It sounds like you are missing a codec for these avi files, and Vegas cannot interpret the data. Where did you get the files from? For example, if they are Divx you can download the latest Divx codec from the web.

I have been capturing these files over the past several years. I have been shooting video for about 10 years with my Canon L2. About 4 years ago I finally bought a powerful enough computer to start editing. I have been using a Pinnacle Studio DC10 Plus capture card installed on a machine running Me. The capture program is an older Sonic Foundry program bundled with Sonic Foundry Videofactory. When I started working with Vegas 4.0 I found the bundled videocapture program was very unstable. The older Videocapture program from Videofactory is very stable and seems to capture high quality video from my camera.
Yes, I think I maybe missing a codec on my new computer. What is a good starting point? Maybe update my Windows Media Player in XP?

Then you need to install a software MJPEG codec on your new machine or the DC10+ card (which is a hardware MJPEG) with the appropriate XP drivers on your new machine. It's that simple.

Do a search on these forums for MJPEG. You will find a wealth of resources.
