Speck Removal

I've got some nice footage of a baby whale shark but unfortunately there's was a piece of muck inside the housing lens that spoils it.

I've corrected passages of the footage by cutting a small hole over the speck with a bezier mask with blended edges, then placing the same footage on a lower track shifted a few pixels to the side and allowing it to show through.

This approach works great when the speck is over footage of unchanging blue water but as soon as the action cuts across the speck it doesn't work well.

I'm considering rendering the whole thing as an image sequence and repairing frame by frame (ugh!) but I'm wondering if there is a better way to do it. For example there's a FCP plugin at http://www.chv-plugins.com/clone.html that might simplify the process. Maybe there's something similar that could work with Vegas?

Thanks, Nick

The image sequence will give you the best results, but it is painful.

You can also use the Delogo filter (a filter for VirtualDub). Using this plugin, you create a mask of 100% red for the problem area. The plugin then replaces the masked area with a blend of adjacent pixels. If the area is small (which it sounds like it is), the results will generally be quite good.

I think I provided more information a long time ago in this thread:

Delogo filter: Delogo

Thanks a lot John, that sounds promising. I'll check it out.
