Specs question

Nizar-AbuZayyad wrote on 11/4/2024, 2:30 PM

Below are my PC specs. I'm considering increasing the RAM to 128GB from my current 64GB, but I’m wondering if this upgrade will actually improve my 4K editing and rendering performance in Vegas Pro or if 96GB would be sufficient. Will I see a noticeable difference in performance with 128GB, or would 96GB be more than enough? I’m open to purchasing two more 32GB sticks but want to ensure it will make a real impact.

CPU: Intel Core i9-12900F
GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 3080 12GB Gaming
RAM: 64GB (2x32GB) XPG Spectrix D50 DDR4 3200MHz Grey
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z690-P WIFI D4 Gaming (LGA 1700)

An increase in performance from 64 to 128 GB should be minor.

Desktop: PC AMD 3960X, 24x3,8 Mhz * RTX 3080 Ti (12 GB)* Blackmagic Extreme 4K 12G * QNAP Max8 10 Gb Lan * Resolve Studio 18 * Edius X* Blackmagic Pocket 6K/6K Pro, EVA1, FS7

Laptop: ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED * internal HDR preview * i9 12900H with i-GPU Iris XE * 32 GB Ram) * Geforce RTX 3070 TI 8GB * internal HDR preview on the laptop monitor * Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K mini

@Wolfgang S. Even with multiple programs open simultaneously? I typically have Photoshop running alongside Vegas, plus around 15 Chrome tabs, and I frequently switch between them. You think i wont need more than 64GB's?

The thing I notice about Modern Vegas is how much VRAM it uses now not RAM, can be typically 22.7GB on a 24GB VRAM card. Is there actually any benefit to that, or would Vegas equally eat up most of the Vram of a 48GB VRAM card aslo and have the exact same performance, same again for a 12GB card.

With Ram you're supposed to run it in pairs otherwise you'll have dual channel with 2 modules and a single channel, for optimum performance you'd need 128GB. I don't think Vegas will run better unless you're running out of ram. Software like Resolve's Fusion can use all the ram you have because it can increase it's ram caches to improve performance. The Vegas equivalent is probably DRP, with previous versions there is a difference between it on and off, but a much higher amount didn't seem to change performance. Also now DRP either in whole or part is using your GPU's VRAM.

Probably not- are you currently running out of ram? I have 64GB and really it's overkill for everything I've done so far. That includes having two web browsers open.

For VEGAS I agree with UltraVista that VRAM is more important as it seems to be caching frames to that for decoding.

Adding more RAM has the effect of reducing the amount of buffers that spill over into Virtual Memory, which takes longer to access.

32 MB is really all you need; your 64MB may have a slight but measurable difference on preview performance with small projects, but above that it's just bragging rights

@Nizar-AbuZayyad Keep the 64GB and spend your money elsewhere, like an upgrade of the CPU, you can keep the motherboard as this has a 1700 socket. Go for a gen 13 or 14 processor, gen 15 is around the corner end of this year, but this one requires a different socket. Prices may drop for gen 13 and 14 though due to the release of gen 15...

@bitman I don’t think I’ll upgrade my CPU right now since it’s only been about a year since I bought my PC. I might consider investing in a Gen 15 CPU later. I initially thought that increasing the RAM would improve performance and speed up tasks, but everyone here seems to agree that it wouldn’t be beneficial. So, I’ve decided against getting extra RAM. Instead, I’m considering investing in a 4TB SSD, which might be a better option than adding more RAM.

@RogerS This is how things look like regarding CPU / RAM / VRAM while im rendering a full HD project (most of the times i edit i render 4K) also i'm having like 20 tabs of chrome open and also photoshop open.

@RogerS i added the screenshots in the previous comment but it seems they didnt show up. I hope they appear now.

System ram and vram look good. If you use a GPU enabled render template you'd have lower CPU use (though likely lower quality or larger file sizes). See if MagixAVC or MagixHEVC with NVENC give acceptable quality. They will be quite fast.

I also wouldn't upgrade the very good CPU and GPU you have. There are some sales on storage at Amazon and B&H.
