Speculating on the Next VEGAS Pro Version - What are Your Expectations

Peter-V wrote on 7/28/2023, 1:26 AM

Hey fellow VEGAS Pro enthusiasts,

I've been a dedicated user of our beloved video editing software for a significant amount of time now. As we inch closer to August - a month that traditionally brings us a new version of VEGAS Pro - I'm finding myself increasingly excited about the potential upgrades and tweaks that may be just around the corner.

Personally, I'm really hoping for some fundamental updates to the keyframing system. We all know the magic of smooth animations and how they can turn good edits into great ones. Making this feature more user-friendly and deep would be a game-changer.

I'm also crossing my fingers for an enhanced color grading panel. Just imagine the possibilities if we could 'animate' the color grade, enabling us to fine-tune the color transitions over time in our projects. This, coupled with a more sophisticated mask control system integrated with color grading (though I admit it might be too ambitious), could make VEGAS Pro an even more powerful and dynamic editing tool.

Beyond these specific feature requests, I'd also appreciate an overall improvement in stability and a sleeker, more consistent UI. By 'consistent', I don't just mean the aesthetics, but also the usability. It would be ideal if the windows adhered to the same design style and behavior, offering a smoother and more harmonious user experience. As it stands now, the platform does come off as a bit antiquated and jittery in its appearance and functionality at times.

But enough about my hopes and dreams! What about yours? What are you hoping to see in the upcoming version of VEGAS Pro? Any specific upgrades or new features on your wishlist? And do you also expect the release to happen in August, as per the tradition?

I expect more in the way of incremental improvements that continue the progress made in VP 20.

I especially hope for more refinement on the audio side where VSTs just work and perform well.

Peter-V wrote on 7/28/2023, 10:56 AM

@RogerS yeah that would be good.

The amazing news will be......

- save video preview at runtime to Vram and Dram.
- fix for Hevc in I/O, (flashing image and constant discussion whether to turn Legacy on or off. This has been solved for maybe 5 years and it's already embarrassing).
- fixing the proxy preview so that it is not displayed in poor resolution and the option to choose your codec.
- stable support for DJI. Blacklist still exists as of VP15.
- support for variable Framerate.
- the ability to speed up the video using the CTRL key more than 400%
- export text in the timeline to SRT and SUB as in Vegasaur.
- stability so Vegas doesn't freeze every 10 minutes when editing Hevc and AVC 4k.
- definitive fix for VST plugins that are broken since VP20 b402
- the ability to open multiple projects in one program and the ability to move events, including keyframes, between projects.

Peter-V wrote on 7/28/2023, 11:11 AM

@pierre-k not the most optimistic prediction, but it's not necessarily unrealistic. Your last point would be a winner though. More ways for VEGAS to interact with other .veg timelines within the same instance would be great. I would also love to finally have some real and actually good ways to save, share and transfer presets for animations, transitions and keyframes. Right now the scene for that seems kind of dreary.

pierre-k wrote on 7/28/2023, 11:15 AM

I don't believe that my list will ever be fulfilled. I've been asking for it for several years.

Former user wrote on 7/28/2023, 11:30 AM

My very simple request is for Video FX search to find the presets not just the fx's in the main list. At the moment I have to go down through the list with the keyboard down arrow to fill some kind of cache, search then does find all the presets but if Vegas closes that 'cache' is then lost.

fr0sty wrote on 7/28/2023, 1:28 PM

Animating color grading would be cool. You can kind of already do that, just take an event and split it into two, color grade one event a certain way, then color grade the other event on the other side of the split a different way, and then put a fade between them.

One thing I want to be sure to point out, just like with Vegas 20, Vegas 21 is going to be an evolving platform. The feature set that you see at release is not going to be the final feature set, more features are going to be added with each update. So when you have the new feature set revealed, don't get disappointed if the feature you were hoping for is not there. It may still be coming in a future update.

I would love to see audio stability improvements, speeding up reaction time.

I'd like to see Smart mask come out of beta...

Maybe some other cool AI masking effects to revolutionize the color grading process?

I would love to see improvements to the adjustment track functionality to make it way more versatile than the current track based system could offer...

I'd love to see an overhaul to the masking system that would bring it up to being on par with the most popular masking and motion tracking systems out there.

My wish list is longer than that, but that's about all I have time to list for now.

We'll see what the future holds.

@pierre-k that sucks. Many of my old complaints and wishes have been resolved throughout time with the new releases, but there are still many things I'd like to see added. I've been completely mindblown with the progress of other video editing apps in this space, and even on smartphones it's getting crazy. I'm very curious in general to see how in the world VEGAS will keep up and compete in this new era. Anyways, I hope you'll see some of your wishes fullfilled in the near future. I still believe the timeline editing experience of VEGAS is unmatched.

@Former user I agree soooo much. The FX browsing experience took a hit when they removed the list thing. I generally wish they give us more freedom in how we can organize all our stuff, the FX, the presets, everything. It's all so rigid right now, I want folders, I want to be in control, give me custom icons, give me something.

@fr0sty Thank you for your thoughts. I guess we have to keep our expectations in check, but maaan there's a lot of good stuff happening in the video editing space, MAGIX/VEGAS is going to have to pick up the pace with both their features and how they market their stuff. VEGAS is generally so very quiet all throughout the year, with a general big blowout with the release, and then they go kinda quiet again. Again, referring to the marketing.

Thx for all your comments, I like reading about your thoughts and wishes and imaging the next step for VP.

I'd be a happy first day upgrade customer if they fixed the top six bugs in the backlog and added no features in the first build of Vegas Pro 21.

Probably because new features cause always a lot of new bugs.

I don't feel the UI is outdated or not sleek enough, there is nothing in the UI that ever got in my way. Having said that, I've been repeatedly bringing up the bad visibility of muted events, and why they are not just clearly greyed out entirely. so you can instantly see that they are muted, especially in a sea of sometimes literally hundreds of colored clips, like in multicam projects.
Other than that, I'd like the possibility to custom color single events so as to create categories across the project window, regardless of the track color.
Also, an updated text generator would be nice...and last but not least, dare I say preview speed?? Is it still not possible to make use of our new superperformant expensive GPUs to get a decent preview speed?

Such performance improvements are indeed coming, but they take time. The core of Vegas is code is having to be rewritten, and Vegas is a very complex program. As I've been saying, there's some announcements coming that are going to make a lot of people very happy in that regard.

Probably because new features cause always a lot of new bugs.

Probably not. The bugs I've seen fixed are not related to new features.

The ability to lock a track at the track header. Bring back the folders for video fx. Work better with graphics drivers. There always seem to be issues with them, whether AMD or Nvidia. Magic mask would be wonderful. Better memory management with BorisFX plugins like Particle Illusion or anything in the BCC Particle Folder. Same with Title Studio. If you cancel the effect, most of the memory still remains "stuck" in Vegas.

The UI is fine by me. Fancy look might be nice to some, but not me. i was quite happy with the "old" look, but understand that sometimes, things need a "fresh coat of paint".

Looking forward to the next release, and maybe some news about the Vegas team itself.

- stability so Vegas doesn't freeze every 10 minutes when editing Hevc and AVC 4k..

Actually i work on mostly visual music videos. Which contains lots of effects & 4k footages. And on those moments VP gives me freeze problems.

Like in this project i used all mostly data is stock images from pexels which are 6000 x 4000.. and freez crashes were too much.

So I had to compress those images..

Yes. Exactly. The problem with Hevc was not fixed at all. Maybe just something.

But the flickering problem remained. I play the video with legacy turned off, because otherwise the video would be choppy. And I have 16 core intel.

With legacy off and quicksync uhd 770 active, the videos are smooth, but sometimes they flicker.
