Splicing big files into small...

i HAVE 2 hr (4.5+ Gbyte) MPG files that I want to split into more workable files of say 40 minutes each. What is the most efficient way of doing this? I have a a pentium 4 2.4 with 512M. When put into trimmer, it moves incredibly slow (even painting the frames) if not shutting down. Is this normal? I thought I paid for Vegas so that it would be reliable and quicker. Maybe the trimmer is not the answer. Would 40 minute files move better? What am I missing here, this is VERY disappointing.

I can't tell you what program to use to split them (someone else will soon) but I can confirm that mpeg is slow to decompress on the timeline. It's not vegas eigther as I've had MANY DV AVI clips on a timeline on my computer (p3-667) and everything loads up fast. But, at work with the mpeg's i edit, i use an amd 2600 and it goes sluggish with those mpeg's. :( If it was me, and i wan't picky where the file would be split, i would plop it in the timline, cancel the audio peak creation, zoom all the way out, click in the middle, split, then render each half.

But that's what i would you. you probley have a method to your maddness. :)
