split screen

how do i make a split screen without moving the shot over. i tried doing this through pan/crop but what i want is the shot to cut in half, but still be in the same shot in the screen as it was before.. example- full screen of man sitting in chair on left side of sicreen. i want to go from that to just the side of the man sitting (left) and leave the rite side of the screen transparent for another shot. i dont want it centered
please help!

Here's what you do (a real simple way):
Step 1) plop the video you want on the right half of the screen on a vid track.
step 2) plop the video you want on the left half on a vid track above that one
step 3) goto the Media Generators tab (with Explore, Trimmer, etc.) and goto the "checkerboard" set.
step 4) Plop the "split screen" preset above your 2 videos.
step 5) on your top VIDEO later (not the black/white square, the one below it), click the "make a composeting child" arrow on the far left of the track (to the left of the track #).
step 6) Bck in your split screen glory! :)

You asked this in another post, but i'll help anyway.

You need more then 1 video track, and it's a bent arrow pointing up on the left of the track name/#.

There are 3-4 split screen veg files on the Sundance site, plus those found in my book. (shameless plug)
