splitting renders

What is the best way of "splitting" renders for a larger project.
I'm using a combination of jpg's and AVCHD video clips with Vega pro 13, and I would like to make the whole project been slpitted up i several "sub-clips" so the Vegas doesnt have to render it all, and the finally merge it all together.
Any recommendations ?

I do this most of the time. Render to a format that can be 'smart rendered' by Vegas for the 'chapters' then combine all of them on a time line and save as Complete (file name) then just render again. Vegas should then just buzz through it with a "no compression" message.

The reason I do this is because I want to sit and watch each segment, then make any changes if I want to.To sit and watch a 2 to 3hr project would be too much for my attention span. :-)

what format do you recommend for smartrender ?

I use either MXF or XAVC. The template being used depends on my source footage.

Depends on your final output. What's it going to, DVD, Blu-ray??

I make BluRay format, but placed on a NAS device
my normal workflow are: avc video ac3 sound, and then merged with tsMuxer to m2ts

Why not use a lossless intermediate format such as Lagarith for you split renders? The files are large, but can be deleted once you render them out again to a single file in your final format. Your final render won't be as quick as a smart render, but it can take place overnight.

Don't trust Vegas when it says that it is not re-compressing. It tells lies so far as MPEG2 is concerned.
