Spot the Amateur

I think the underlying theme is that transitions are best selected to enhance the viewing experience, and not simply for the sake of a cool transition -- which is where the "spot the amateur" tag came from. I'm sure we've all been guilty of overapplying snazzy transitions, even when they didn't quite fit into our projects. I found it interesting the Georoge Lucas used several "old fashioned" iris-type transitions in his Star Wars films, I think to give them the old serial "feel."

A thoughtfully selected transition can be an effective mechanism in telling the story.

As a rule of thumb, I use as many different transitions as possible!! But remember, to accompany the plethora of visual delights you'll need a soundtrack that's really lush. Here's a great quote from a Sonar forum to tip you off on how to achieve a most lush soundtrack...

“1,. Compress everything!
2,. EQ each instrument to a very limited band.
3, Apply reverb everywhere!
4,.if You are looking for "modern" lush, make sure you use doplers and duckers or vocoder on all vocal tracks.
5,. Now limit HARD ! If you don't have a 20db fast limit chances are the lush won't be so plush and may just be slush by the time your done.

If not lush enough, use the Lushelistic Pro. I can get a an uthorized copy to you for less then $500 / channel"

Now we're talkin', baby!!! Yeah!!

Well, I never thought I'd see the day...

We used to have a "pool" that whoever could sell a client the cheezy "Video-Toaster wheelchair-wipe" got fifty bucks.

It never happened at our shop, but last night I saw a vid for a nursing home for the deaf and yes, the wipe was there... amazingly, it was not only appropriate for the transition, it was the *only* appropriate transition in the whole piece. Everything else was filp-this, spin-that, even a *page-peel* from a sepia-toned-still to the same shot in color and motion.

Hadda laugh.

P.S. On a more compassionate note, we all gotta start somewhere; hopefully we don't get stuck there too.
