Assuming this message is relating to a critical SQL Server update, you would:

Launch Internet Explorer, navigate to: http://update.microsoft.com

Click on the "Custom" button.

Look to the left. Click on "Software Optional" Choose anything that specifies SQL Server (or Visual Studio or .NET). Also, make sure all "High Priority" updates are selected.

"Review & Install Updates",

Then "Install Updates"

Good Luck!

[Edit] PS: Sometimes you need to do this two or three times as some updates need pre-reqs, and the update you need will not be put on until some other update is installed.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know of anyway to get update information without using Internet Explorer? Mine is locked down.

Vista? There's a "Windows Update" in the control panel.

XP? You could try: Control Panel->Security Center->Automatic Updates = "ON". And wait & wait for windows to do its thing... may or may-not get the updates you need.

Other than that, if you Google "windows updates without internet explorer", there's some software called "windizUpdate" - never used it, can't vouch for it.

Good Luck!

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I have windows automatic updates disabled. I usually use Belarc which lists the missing updates and then search the Microsoft Download Center for the updates I need. But in this case it seems Microsoft have revised some security bulletin numbers and I can't find a patch that will install. If anyone is running XP SP3 I'd be grateful if they would check add/remove programs, show updates and see what hotfixes were installed recently - they have KB numbers - that's the number I need, I think. I'm sure there must be some hotfix for either Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable or Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable that I am missing. Thanks again,

Kit

Unfortunately, I do not have SQL Server 2005 installed on my XP workstation. However, If someone who does (and is up-to-date on their updates) would go to Control Panel->Add, Remove Programs. Make sure "Show Updates" is checked. Scroll down to each of Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable or Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable". Then do a "Print Screen" and post the results back here, that should give you a clue re: what updates are needed.

Good Luck!

Edit: Kit, I just re-read your post... and I think I just repeated what you requested. Maybe if we say it twice, we'll get a faster response [grin].

This is what I find on my xp pro sp3 machine:
Visual C++ 9.0 no kb number
Visual C++ 2008 x86 Runtime v 9.0.30729.01
Visual C++ 2005 ATL update KB973923
Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable no kb number

All the rest are security updates - about 50 this year so far.

Thanks for taking the time, Lynn - that's useful. It seems that I don't have this update:

Visual C++ 2005 ATL update KB973923

But I can't figure out how to find it. Searching on Microsoft Update sends me in circles.

I have a similar problem with a missing security update for XP related to SQL server. I think I have SQL Server on my system because Media Manager installed it. The XP update tries to install but fails and I think that may be because the SQL server is slightly different from Sony.

Are others seeing this? I haven't contacted Microsoft yet. Ideas?

Details:
running XP SP3
Vegas 8.0c

The microsoft update tool trys to install:
Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

Every time, the update runs for a while and fails to install. I have run it many times trying to start or stop services, delete downloaded files, etc. Still fails.

I look at "Review Update History" from Microsoft and all the failures for this update are listed. They all show Error Code 0x737D

I look at the list of services in XP configuration tools and I see:
SQL Server (SONY_MEDIAMGR2)

So this isn't a pure Microsoft service. I'm wondering if that is the reason the security update won't install, and if I can get it installed some other way?
