Starry night using media generator, help...

Hi everyone,

Just a quick plea for help on generating stary nights with the media generator preset...I seem to be missing something coz all I get is loads of bright ants rushing madly around my screen when applying any minor changes to the preset...All I'm trying to get is a nice sparkling star field which I succeeded in reproducing previously using a couple of layers of black media, adding noise etc...Isn't it possible to reproduce with the media generator starry night preset? (I spent a good 30 mins playing around with it with little success...) any quick pointers ?

Thanks in advance,

and Feliz Navidad!!! (as we say over here...)

Paul

I’m not sure what parameters you are changing but any changes to Frequency or Offset will cause the stars to crawl because these control where the stars are placed. Try playing with the Noise Parameters especially the Max control to have more or less stars at any given time. Also, if you want to stack more than one generated media on another track, make sure you change Color B to be transparent on the upper tracks so the lower track stars show through.

Just a quick guess ... 'cause this is the sort of thing i mess up all the time myself ...

Is it possible that you changed the "Progress" slider with the cursor set somewhere other than the beginning of the event? This may have created a new keyframe where the cursor was instead of changing the setting at the beginning of the event. In this case, when the event plays, the progress will vary from the beginning to that new keyframe. This could easily result in the ants effect.

One thing i'd really like to have in a future version of Vegas is the ability to position the cursor anywhere in the clip so i can see the effect of my changes at that frame in the preview window, but have the changes apply to the previous or selected keyframe instead of creating a new one. Turning off the lock to cursor control helps some, but it's still not a perfect solution.

Hear, hear!

How would you like a button to play the selected loop or just the event the FX applies to, from the FX window, showing you the result of your tweaks? Me too.

This effect sounds very interesting, but I searched the forum and didn't see any othe reference to it. Does someone have a .veg of this?

Here's a method i picked up from here (or linked from here) a long time ago (VV3 times)

Starfields
Indert video track.
Right clock on it, choose Insert generated media, solid color option. Choose black.
Drop the add noise filter on the generated media. Shut off animated and gaussian noise.
Slide the noise add all the way to 1.00. or all the way to the right.
Add contrast and brightness. Pust the contrast all the way to the max/right side.
This creates the first stars you will see.

Duplicate the track.
Pull the opacity to 50-60% on the new track.
Open track/motion tool. With the cursor sync button depressed, move the cursor to the end of the starfield media.
Enlarge the picture to about 125%.
(You can create the hyper drive effect by zooming quickly and applying blur to the field.)
For more movement, apply the track motion tool to the first media as well. Make sure it’s moving at a slightly different speed than the second track.

Sorry I have not kept info on the source of the tip.
