This feature is for creating segues. This allows you to overlap the end of one song with the beginning of the next track. An example of this would the track sequencing on discs such as the beatles sargent peppers lonely hearts club band or pink floyds dark side of the moon. Hopefully this makes this issue clear.

The second audio layer is to enable more complex custom crossfades to be drawn with the volume envelope. Both layers are stereo, and are merged to a single stereo stream on writing.
