Stereo Mix (again)

VideJoe wrote on 7/22/2007, 1:11 PM
What seems so easy in other multi channel applications like Cubase and Sonar I can't figure out in SF9.
I recorded 4 channels I want to downmix into a stereo end mix.
I found some entries in the manual about "Mix". But for some reason I cannot get it to work.
Where can I find some transparant instructions about this issue?

The default pan is centered. So you need to move the pan slider left or right on each individual track as needed.

Thanks, but the issue is how to save a stereo mix from multiple tracks.

Lets take my example:
Track 1 - Vocal mic main singer.
Track 2 - Drummer
Track 3 - Backup singers Mic 3
Track 4 - Backup singers Mic 4
Track 5 - Piano Mic 5

I like the lead singer to be on both channels so on track1 I leave the pan centered.
Same with the drummer. I want the piano to be slightly left of the main singer
in my mind so I pan it slightly left.
Backup singers group one on Mic / track 3 I move the pan slider fully to the left.
Backup singers group two on Mic / track 4 I move the pan slider fully to the right.
I will now hear the main vocal on both channels and in my headset or room speakers
I can tell there are separate groups singing backup.

This really is just like a physical mix board.

If I understand your question correctly, I think the "downmix" you're wanting is actually to render your mulititrack mix to a single stereo file?

Sorry, check page 44 of the Sound Forge 9 manual.
There is a merge L/R to stereo check box.

There is also a Sound Forge Family Forum
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowTopics.asp?ForumID=3

Some of us do more video editing and forget about Sound Forge.

File> Render as

Transparent enough Joe?
VideJoe wrote on 7/22/2007, 4:27 PM
Nope, sorry. The option Render as is greyed out. You can only use render as when you have created a SF project file. But basically if you recorded you tracks from scratch it's the same as Save As, which gives you the same options, none of them offers a stereo down mix.
I also inserted the pan view, but it does not behave as a track pan, but an overall pan. It's all over my four recorded tracks. In other words, I cannot insert a pan by track.
I have been using SF versions for many years, great tool for editing. But for multi track recording and downmixing I wonder why they made it this obscure.
It's much easier to import the four tracks I recorded in and edited in SF into Sonar or Tracktion en push a few buttons and you're done. Piece of cake, no manual required.

Were talking about Vegas, right? Are you running a demo version? which as I recall, some functions are not available and greyed out

Sound Forge is not a "multi-track" application. Though SF-9 can have multiple trk.s. But does not handle them as a recording mixing multi-track.

Ehrrr..no we are talking SF9.
I tried recording multiple channels in Vegas 9, but I cannot assign indiividual tracks of my Motu 828 MkII to the individual Vegas audio tracks.

Maybe I should post it again on the Sound Forge forum.

Why not? How exactly do you want to do this? Be specific.

Also, Forge is really not the tool for what you want to do. Forge is a multichannel file editor. It is really not meant as a mixer. Yes, it can mix things, but not how you want.

This is what I do in Vegas Peter.
I select the proper audio device in the Preferences/Audio Device.
I can only select here one Default Audio Recording Device.
In Vegas I Insert 4 Audio Tracks.
Now I'm stuck, because I don't know how/where to assign the various Motu 828 MkII channels to the Vegas audio tracks so I can use Vegas to record four seperate channels.
In the mean time I posted the same thread on the Sound Forge forum and got a tip using Process/ Channel Converter to turn multi tracks into a stereo down mix.

Right Click on the track and you will see the menu item:

"Record Inputs"

This item will let you set the input source for the tracks.

Alternatively, you could arm the tracks, and then the input source chooser button will appear. Clicking this will allow you to change the input source for the track also.

FWIW: This is covered in the online help and the Vegas user manual.

That's what I did before Peter. Didn't look beyond the Stereo and Mono options, he, he.

Thanks, Joe
