Still Images from GoPro 11 are Black Screen after Render

mhammann57 wrote on 1/31/2026, 7:02 PM

I use still images from a GoPro 11 which are inserted into a Vegas 23 project timeline with default transition and display time (5 seconds). The preview shows the images however, after rendering, the images do not appear. All I get instead is a black screen. The audio still plays. Images in the project that didn't originate from GoPro display correctly. I have included the MediaInfo file for one of the images along with the properties reported from Vegas 23 - Build 302. I use NVidia GeForce 3060 drivers 32.0.15.6590.

An issue with VP23.302 that I can confirm, still images turn into black. My option sofar, restart Vegas with the still images project and render the project directly without doing any further edits.

Did not work but thank you for trying to help. Hope that the software engineers at Magix can figure this one out. If anyone has a suggestion or knows if there is any information I can provide, please let me know. Side note: Some still images in my timeline do render. They originated as screenshots taken from a video clip and inserted in timeline toward the end as a still image. The ones that appear black are the ones taken with my GoPro 11 and inserted into the end of the timeline after I did some minimal editing with either Adobe LightRoom 5 or Paint.net. Maybe the GoPro camera creates images with a characteristic that is causing this. Maybe try using still images created with a different camera. I'll keep playing with it to see if there are any other clues as to what is causing this behavior.

Thanks Again,

Mark

In my timeline even screenshots taken from the preview turn into black as soon as I rendered the timeline. In any case, this is a bug that showed up first time in Vegas, since version 23

mhammann57 wrote on 2/1/2026, 6:45 PM

Found a workaround. I created a copy of my original project and deleted everything except the still image sequence at the end of the timeline. The still images and their transitions were rendered into a new video clip. This video clip was used instead of the individual still images in my original project. When I rendered the new project, all images (now contained in the video clip) displayed successfully. No blacked out images. I am left wondering why I can render a sequence of still images without black outs if they are the only kind of media used in the project. Thanks to 3POINT for information about this bug in Vegas 23 Build 302.

Please upload a sample file and share a link

for the Vegas community to reproduce the issue.

I'm curious about what might be unique about this file, if anything.

mhammann57 wrote on 2/2/2026, 1:37 PM

Here is a link to one of the still image files that renders as a black screen. This file displays properly when it is being previewed. It originated from my GoPro 11 and has had some slight editing (ex: dimensions changed from 4:3 to 16:9) using Paint.net. In a separate test project, I can successfully render a video clip from this file combined with other still image files. The successful render of this test project contained images that render as black screens and others that rendered properly in the original project.

Here is a file of one of the images that produce a black screen.

The following is a link to a file that renders properly in the original project. It was part of the same still image sequence at the end of my timeline. This image originated as a screenshot (frame grab) from a video that is also part of the same original project.

Let me know if I can provide any other information.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

@mhammann57

I have been unable to reproduce your black screen issue on my desktop or my laptop. Neither of these machines have an Nvidia video adapter.

mhammann57 wrote on 2/10/2026, 1:13 PM

Thank you for taking the time to help! Interesting note about the lack of an NVidia adapter. I suppose I can try to render using the integrated video on a different system (i7-12700K w/UHD 770) or look into the drivers for the card which is part of an i9-13900K system. Can't remember if I am using studio driver or not. Also still left wondering why the black screened stills are only an issue when rendering the larger project and not an issue when rendering a project that only consists of a few of the problematic images. Sorry for taking so long to reply. Information is much appreciated!

Does changing the GPU from NVIDIA to Intel in preferences/ video help? Make sure the iGPU is enabled in bios first.

Other than that it sounds like a bug that should be investigated and fixed.

I finally found out one way to solve my problem. In Options > Pref > File I/O my "Hardware Decoder to Use" option was set to "Off." My system has an NVidia GeForce RTX 3060 display adapter. After selecting the NVidia 3060 in the I/O settings, the problematic still images rendered with the rest of the video as long as I wasn't using GPU acceleration. So to summarize, (for my situation) the hardware decoder has to be set to using the GeForce 3060 AND the GPU acceleration has to be set to OFF. Hopefully, I have not wasted anyone's time asking for help because it makes sense to select the NVidia 3060 as the decoder when I use the H.265 (NVENC) option for rendering. Please accept my apologies if that is the case. I do appreciate everyone's help and advice on this forum more than you know. Thanks again!
