Still need help docking windows in Pro 13

JackW wrote on 11/19/2015, 12:11 AM
I'm either having a very senior moment or something has gone haywire. I'm suddenly no longer able to dock windows. I can open a utility -- Transitions or Generated Media for example -- but cannot dock anything other than Project Media, Excalibur. and the preview window. Everything shows up on screen as a window, but the windows won't dock. No tabs other than Project Media and Excalibur show up at the bottom of the screen either (I'm editing with the timeline at the top.)

Any suggestions on how to resolve this will be greatly appreciated.

Could be this: Hold down CTRL Key to dock. It used to be that docking was auto and now it is the other way around.

Thanks Grazie. I tried that when this first happened and it didn't work.

Just change the setting. It's under Preferences>Display> check "Allow floating windows to dock (hold Ctrl to override)"

No idea why they changed the default.

Tried that too, Old Smoke. Doesn't work either. What's happening is that the windows stack on top of each other when pulled into the docking area and no tabs appear. I've done everything suggested in the "Help" menu and still no joy.

You could try and reseting Vegas but note that it will reset all your custom settings.

From the Pro 13 manual (p. 29)

To dock a window, drag it to the docking area or a floating dock. Drop near the top of the window to create a tabbed window or a new docking area.
Drop at the top of the window to dock the window at the top.
Drop at the bottom of the window to dock the window at the bottom .

When the Allow floating windows to dock check box on the Display tab of the Preferences dialog is cleared, windows will not dock unless you hold the Ctrl key.
When the check box is selected, you can prevent a window from docking by holding the Ctrl key.

Thanks Mike. I've been through the help menu material carefully. What's strange is that two windows dock and tabs are generated. All other windows stack and no tabs are created. I'm stumped! I may have to do as Old Smoke suggests and reset the entire program. Hate to do it, though, if there's some other way.

@Jack
Just hold CTRL+SHIFT while launching Vegas until a message box comes up. If you have Vegasaur, you could try and save your presets first.

Thanks to all. Once my wife finishes the edit she's working on I'll try the factory reset and see if that takes care of the problem. Meanwhile, I'll listen to the moaning and sighing that's coming from her office.
