Still Photo Quality On Video Overlay

I have a series of quality JPGs, Pngs, that are used along with a music track to produce a short movie.
The quality of these images is horrible in the movie... Out of focus, Color etc.
What is the problem? I have a number of image editing programs. What can I do to
insure movie studio maintains the image quality in the movie. Do they need to be a certain resolution, image size whatever?
I assume I can place these images on the text, video,or video overlay tracks of the movie.
Thanks

Resolution of stills?
Render properties, including resolution and bitrate?

And project properties.

Yes, you can place them on any video track. The track header names are just default suggestions. You can rename them to anything you want if desired.

Focus has nothing to do with this, it's only lower resolution and transformations applied to image. Have you got any track motion involved?
Color levels can be off limits, you need to apply Color Levels filter with preset "Computer RGB to Studio RGB" if you use studio gamma project and render to mainconcept mpeg-2, mainconcept avc or sony avc.
Please say us render settings you use in addition to project settings.
