"Stop" button while capturing also stops playing DV source!

After searching and searching the entire forum base, nothing has been mentioned about this annoying bug.

I play Digital8 tapes on a GV-D200 deck, which is connected to the computer via Firewire. While in capture mode, I prefer to use the DV Device Control features to rewind, ff, play, stop, pause, etc. Everything works fine in that aspect.

For my line of work, I only need to capture certain parts of a tape. So as I watch a tape and see something I want to capture, I hit CTRL-R to start the capture. However, when I want to stop the capture, the only button available to me is the Stop button (I usually hit the spacebar). As I hit the Stop button, the capture stops, but so does the playback of the tape! I want the tape to continue playing.

I am tired of always having to hit Play again after capturing a scene. It takes extra time and also is not very healthy for my deck. Are there any bug fixes or methods of stopping a capture without stopping the playback of a tape? Keep in mind, I know I can just disable DV Device Control, but I would rather keep it enabled.

Thanks!

It is annoying, isn't it?

I guess this is an executive decision you have to make. Is it better to have to restart playback each time or is it better to disable device control and then have to use the buttons on the deck to fast forward? You just have to pick which works better for you. I prefer the second option.

You might find Scenalyzer helps you. It can preview a tape and then you select the clips you want and it captures them in batch mode.

See if this will help. I use Batch capture so the source machine just goes into pause between captured clips. I don't know of anything that will stop capture on the fly.

(This is from the manual I edited. The first 12 is just setting up folders for the captured clips.)

13. Click Advanced Capture.
14. Click the play icon or press the space bar. The tape will start and the picture will show in the preview window.
15. At the beginning of the wanted clip click the Pause icon or press the Enter key.
16. Locate the exact beginning frame of the clip: Place the mouse cursor on the Shuttle button, (to the right of the transport controls) hold down the left button and move the button left or right to shuttle the tape backward or forward to find the beginning frame you want for the start of the clip.
17. Click on the Timecode "In" icon to the right of the Timecode "In" box or press the i key.
18. Play the tape to the end of the clip (Space bar), pause (Enter key) and click the Timecode "Out" icon to the right of the Timecode "Out" box or press the o key.
19. Click the Log In/Out icon.
20.. Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each clip.
21. When all the clips are logged click Batch Capture, just above the clip window. The Batch Capture list window will display.
22. Uncheck any clip you don’t want captured then click OK; the tape will rewind and capture will begin.
23. When the capture is complete the Capture Complete window will display; click Done.

With this method your left hand just hangs over the keyboard for the four functions and the mouse stays over the Log icon. I find it very convienient.

Haha yeah that is very true. At first, I kept the Device Control function enabled and restarted my deck each time. But then I just got tired of it and haven't used the Device Control function for a while now. But I still really miss it!

Thanks for the tip. I just downloaded the trial version, so we'll see how it goes!

That sounds like it would help a lot. The only problem is, I can't find any of those functions on my capture program! Maybe we're both using a different version. I have SB Video Capture v3.0 Build 108.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the Vegas software for the additional $30 or whatever it is. Anybody have any problems with it?

Sam, It's worth the $30. And I just had another idea though I haven't tried it out. Now that you have downloaded the trial version try this: (Remember to click Advanced capture so the facilities I mentioned will display.) While the tape in the source is running hit the i key to insert the in point timecode numbers. Let the source keep running and when you get to the out point hit the o key fo insert the outpoint TC. With the mouse, click the Log In/Out icon then do the same for the next clip. It might work.

I must say this though; I would find it very difficult to decide on the in and out points with the source in constant motion. Using the Space, Enter, i and o keys is very convient then sit back while the computer rewinds the tape and captures all the clips.

Yes, I do have Movie Studio; I did have Screenblast and upgraded. It doesn't seem a lot different but it has a number of improvements and you'll have no difficulty making the change.
