Stop Stretch To Fit?

I'm sure this is a simple answer but I'm new to Vegas and haven't been able to figure it out.

I have a HD project 1920 x 1080. On one track I have an image that is considerably smaller than this resolution which I want to overlay against a background. The problem is when I add it to the timeline Vegas automatically stretches it to fill the entire frame which in not what I want. I've tried going into the Pan / Crop and setting the "Stretch to fill frame" option to No but even doing that doesn't reset the size of the image.

What do I need to do to keep the image its correct size?

Right Click->Switches->Maintain Aspect Ratio

Maintain Aspect Ratio is already checked.

I also should have mentioned I'm using Version 10.

On the track that has your picture, click on the Track Motion icon on the left end of the track. When the track motion screen appears, to the right you will see a box with a circle in it. Drag the corner of the box to resize the picture. Move the box around on the workspace to position it in the preview window.

If you don't want to use Track Motion (and create a few necessary keyframes), stick with Pan/Crop, zoom out on the image and position as desired.

Thanks. I can resize the image that way.

I'm still wondering if this isn't a work-around to a problem that shouldn't exist. Shouldn't it be possible to import an image at its correct size without having to resize it with track motion? I'm wondering if there's something wrong with ,my Vegas install or setup.

Did you forget to reset your pan/crop or track motion box after you were done playing with it? If the Maintain Aspect Ratio event switch is checked, it will only fill the frame in one direction, and it can be sized by one of the methods described above.

Vegas is not broken in this respect. Usually, when you drop a picture on the timeline, as in the case of a slide show, one would want it to be full screen. You have at least two methods to change the size.

It would be nice if Vegas included a media switch to do this. It's certainly asked for often enough.

The proper way to do it is in Pan/Crop. Leave Maintain aspect and Switch to fill frame set to Yes. Turn off Lock aspect ratio (one of the buttons on the left edge of the Pan/Crop window). Now type in the size of the project frame for Width and Height. This tells Vegas to assume the image is floating in the center of a window the same size as the project frame.

Just trying this with Vegas 10 for the first time and i see a difference from previous versions. Even with Lock aspect off, Vegas still changes one of the dimensions to match the shape of the source image. Still seems to work the same, just don't be surprised if it doesn't keep one of the numbers you've typed in.

I didn't forget.

It doesn't matter what I do. I can start a blank project at any resolution. When I drag the image to the timeline it resizes it automatically. Maintain Aspect is on by default when it gets dragged to the timeline. Changing it in conjunction with stretch to fit, etc never resets the image to its correct size. I may get vertical or horizontal bars but the image itself is still stretched.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong since I'm still learning Vegas. Doesn't look like I am though. I will use the Pan / Crop or Track Motion to do what I'm trying to achieve.

Thank you again.
