Stops responding when I try to render

I am working with some large video files, they are from a seminar we did last month, each video is about 90-120 minutes long. I've edited a few parts but when I try to render the video, it gets to around 3-6% and stops responding. I've tried to do this on 3 different computers and the same thing happens. I've also tried it with a few different videos.

I'm saving the video as a .wmv , originally it is a .avi but I save it to a .veg file.

Any idea what is causing this?

When this happens to me I render the complete project first to a video file in the same format as the source videos. So if your source videos are dv.avi type-2 captured from a dv cam then render a new dv-type2 file of the complete project.
Then start a new project and use that new rendered file to create to the other formats.
You can also write the new dv.avi type-2 file back to dv tape to archive it.

This is what I do when the program stops responding during format conversions.
Rendering a new project file always fixes this problem. Takes longer but always works for me.
