Strange Artifact/Pixellation Problem on Timeline

Can anyone help with this problem?
I noticed recently that my mpg2 renders have quite a bit of artifacts and/or pixellation scattered about them. The best way to describe this is that I see tiny little "flashes" popping at random spots around the screen.. almost like little stars. I thought this was a camera problem (Canon XL1S) but when I play back the captured avi files in Media Player the video has absolutely no hint of this problem. When I drop the avi file on the Vegas timeline to edit, it suddenly appears. When I render to mpg2 it is of course still there. What would cause the video to behave this way just because it is on the Vegas timeline? I have Vegas 4.0c and my full resolution render quality is set to good (I have tried "best" with no improvement). I am editing on a 3 GHZ AMD machine, ASUS MB, 1GB RAM.

This is driving me crazy!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi TB. It sounds like tape droputs to me. Are you able to play your cam at slow speed under control of Vegas Capture? This would let you check the video on the tape and rule out or confirm any Vegas involvement. (If you suspect the problem is firewire related you can monitor the analogue output of the cam while playing through the tape slowly - hope you get what I mean.)

Have you tried saving the project, re-booting, and then trying again? I have found that Vegas 5.0b sometimes gets in a weird state where it will do exactly what you describe, but if you re-boot, it goes away. I haven't been able to duplicate it, so I don't know what causes it.

Thanks for the responses.
I have tried playing back the tape in slow motion through Vegas capture and it looks fine on the tv output through the S-video out, AND it looks fine through the firewire on the monitor. The AVI file that is captured looks fine when played in Media Player also. The artifacts show up ONLY when a file is put on the timeline, and also when a file is rendered from the timeline.
I'm going to try the suggestion of rebooting and see if that frees up some resources and makes a difference.

Thanks for the help!
