Strange V6 Performance Strangeness

I've seen this on two machines. On both machines Media manager is off. Both are 3.2 P4 with 1 gb and HT on.

If I am running Vegas and then switch to another app, the systems "freezes" for a few seconds (3-5) before responding.

If I close Vegas it takes 5-10 seconds before the system responds.

V5 did not behave this way at all. Could be the better use of multi-cpu's /HT causing it to do this.

One of the reasons I ran HT with Vegas 5, was I could switch apps with instant response. Not with Vegas 6 on my systems.

Is anyone else seeing this.

Vegas 6 itself seems to run pretty good when active - seems as fast or faster than Vegas 5.

I notice this too, although my "hang" times aren't as long as you're reporting. If you watch your performance indicators, you can really watch them temporarily jump, far more than with Vegas 4 or 5. Mine get as high as 70% during boot and close.
You can see some differences in this behavior depending on where you've got your threading set to. Dropping, rather than increasing the RAM preview seems to help as well.

What is the optimal setting for RAM preview? It defaults to 16 meg and says I have 384 mb available on my machine. I've experimented with different settings but don't notice any difference. I'm using a P4 2.8 HT with 512 mb.

Thanks in advance.

In V5, the answer was "As much RAM as possible" but V6 seems to manage it differently. Anything more than 500-600 meg doesn't seem to do a whole lot different.
I'd set it at 250, and unless you need longer RAM previews, leave it there.
If you're working with lots of stills, V5 renders a bit faster with the additional RAM. I've not noticed that to be the case in 6, but I've only timed one render, and that was early March, so we're a few builds past that. 6 just renders faster for me, almost always.

Thanks Spot.....

Have a good weekend!

Concerning RAM setting: didn't I read somewhere on this forum that leaving a free 128Meg of RAM was preferable to have good performance so the system could use it as a "pad" for functionning?

Just a question, I really don't know since I never noticed a difference to the point of having a bug with V5. But I don't consider myself a really hardcore V5 user. Well, I obviously don't rock it the way some users here do. Cuts, fades, a few masks, not too may tracks stacking... never used a transition since I don't really dig those page peels, etc... but hell do I use RAM previews a LOT !!! Ü
