Strange V7d problem

I 'm a long time Vegas user..since V3.
I have used V4 for years on my :30 SD broadcast spots. Super stable and easy on resources. Still use it for simple stuff.
Installed V7d a year or so ago, for some mixed SD and HD work.

PROBLEM: When I output the firewire preview to my external monitor (an old Panasonic 13" tube) using V4, and make color or level adjustments, everything works normally. The output is stable and I can see the adjustments I'm making.
When I try the same thing with SD footage on V7 (levels, CC etc.), the external monitor screen breaks up, flickers grey as though the firewire connection has momentarily disconnected itself. I can play back a rendered file just fine; it's only when attempting to make those FX adjustments that the breakup occurs.
The firewire cable and deck connections are good...work fine on V4. I'm using an old P4 system with a GB of RAM and XP SP2. I know that V7 uses more resources, but this is really puzzling, since I've read here that some are still using older systems with V7 and V8.
Tried re-installing V7...no joy.
Am I missing a Vegas setting somewhere in V7 preferences??

Yes, I know that my system is old, but until I upgrade to a new box, I would really like to fix this problem and use V7.

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

I would start by downloading Vegas 7.0e from here on the chance that the bug might have been fixed in the last update to the version.

One reason most people in the know use 7.0d instead of 7.0e is that the latter introduced a new bug that was deemed to be worse than 7.0d.
I can't recall what it was.
Once again SCS chose not to fix it.

I'm using 7.0d because it was the most stable in that release.
Anyway, back to the issue at hand: Has anybody had a similar problem?
I can't believe that the associated firewire output implementation is different between the program versions.
In checking the preferences, they are the same. I keep the default ram preview setting at 16 to maximize available ram for the processing of renders, etc.
Why does it work in V4 but not in V7?

Still, if you do images of your C drive and can easily revert back to 7d, I'd try 7e and see if that fixes it. Or you can do a total reset on V7d settings by holding down CTRL-SHIFT while starting Vegas. A window will pop up asking if you want to revert to the original clean install of Vegas; you say yes.

I have been a faithful user of 7d ever since it was released. The only feature it lacks that i need is the Elastique stretcher, which first appears on 9c. I have configured 9c to look and behave like 7d, and so far it seems to be working well, though I've only done one project on it so far.

As suggested on another forum, I started V7 with the defaults (Holding down Ctrl+Shift until V7 loads). First try it didn't help. Second time I was able to complete the 2 1/2 minute segment I was working on. Here's hoping it holds up 'till I complete the other segment.
When I build the new box, I'll "upgrade" to 8.0c, which is reportedly the most stable
version after 7.0d.
Thanks for your suggestions, guys.
