Stream Attributes Could Not Be Determined

I am experiencing a challenge in adding an AVI file to current project I am working on with DVD-A. I am working with a series of AVI files that should all be similar (I am not the author of any) but one of them gives the error message under the video line when I try to preview it that "stream attributes could not be determined" while the Audio line shows proper attributes. Simliar AVI files in the series show something like "512x288x12, 25.000 fps, 00:59:32:06, XviD MPEG-4 Codec" for the video line. In my project, after adding the problem file, the thumbnail for the project appears (no image in it) and previewing it plays audio only - no video.

I am a moderately advanced amateur but have no ideas on how to correct the way that DVD-A is reading or processing this file. Is it simply that the file is trashed? It plays fine on InterVideo WinDVD 8 and on Windows Media Player - this makes it stranger that it cannot be recognized here.... Might it work OK after compiling the project?

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

IT's down to codecs - and DVDA and Vegas aren't the greatest of friends with regards to xVid files. Although if you do get the right codecs in place, you can get them to work.

Thanks so much for narrowing this down for me -

I resolved the problem after some further research but it turned out that I did not need to rebalance my codecs.

The real problem was the "fourcc" code of the AVI file and the fact that DVD-A does not recognize any code in an AVI file other than "DIVX". I changed the "xvid" code to "DIVX" (need to use caps) with a program called avic.exe available at -

http://www.inmatrix.com/files/avic_download.shtml

Interestingly, just changing this code resolved everything and caused no performance or playback problems in the AVI file. The very first frame of the AVI had an error message but other than that it played fine and was able to be fully processed with DVD-A.

Thanks for getting me in the ballpark to resolve this - it hung me up for weeks on this project trying to figure it out.
