stupid 2 computer monitor question

musman wrote on 9/11/2004, 10:53 AM
I've always used a 17" lcd as my computer monitor and firewire out to an external monitor for previewing. WOrks okay, but in my current project I need to see more of the tracks in the Vegas timeline. So I need more depth rather than width, if that make any sense. Can this be done? If it matters I believe I have a Matrox g550 dual head graphics card.
Thanks for any help!

Have you tried the Maximise and Minimise facility? . . You can make a difference with it. I've just duped up 52 tracks. Minimised immeadialtey by Double Clicking on vert scroll bar. Double click again and the become bigger. Next to the Track Header Track No. is the tiny MAx and Mini individual Track "sizer" . . give it a go before forling out more money.

52 tracks? Need more . .?

Best regards,

Well, you would certainly be able to move any/all of the dockable windows to the second computer screen, essentially freeing up space for more timeline area. If you go to the View pulldown, uncheck all the dockables and expand the timeline view on your current single screen, you will be able to see if you have the space you need.

Ideally, if you are going for dual screens, it’s nice if they are identical (size/type/resolution/calibration, etc.), IMO. Aside from aesthetics, the benefits become apparent when arranging a multi-window desktop, when stretching applications across screens or say, when moving the preview window from one screen to the other.

Even when not editing in Vegas, the extra desktop real estate is nice to have, especially when running multiple apps.

I use dual screens all the time and for just about everything. I also use the multidesk powertoy ao I can just switch out to a clean set of screens if I need to (conference calls with screen sharing)

In the display control panel you can drag and drop the pictures of your monitors and arrange them as you wish. You could arrange them vertically but of course you might want the real monitors to be vertical too. You might hate that.

Regardless, dual monitors are great, and since you can set up several screen layouts in vegas you could save one that puts all the tracks on the left and all the tools on the right. That would give you more space.

Thanks for the help and the different options, everyone! I'll have to try minimizing more tracks than I have already, but I like to be able to see their names, so I'm hesitant to minimize a lot.
I definitely need to get a second monitor. So I can stack them vertically and show more depth that way? Just wanted to be sure.

Not something you'd use everyday, but I have a ViewSonic VG175 monitor that you can rotate, so you can switch back and forth to landscape mode and your image on the monitor automatically flips the width and height, so you don't lose anything resolution wise, so the tracks wouldn't be that small.
