There's a new version of DVDSubEdit out today that might provide at least a partial solution to some of the menu highlight questions posted recently.

I've just downloaded it, and have not given it a try yet... According to the change list you should be able to edit your menu highlights, and re-import them into your DVD. And you should be able to add a fade to menu button highlights.
With a looping menu background the fade-in might be a problem unless the menu linked to a duplicate without the fade, but might provide a better, easier solution than fading an image of the highlight at the end of the intro.
