Suggestion - Border on cropped image... maybe?

Gid wrote on 8/8/2025, 6:38 PM

I know this maybe should be in the Feature request post but I'd like to make a suggestion to Vegas, or if anyone has a better solution/option..?

When adding a border to a cropped image the Border fx doesn't respect the cropping, you get variations of this where the border doesn't fit the outline of the image.

But with BCC DVE Obsolete you can add a border to the cropped image, use VPs cropping options or the cropping options in DVE or even a png with transparency. (& then PinP to position it)

Boris call this fx 'obsolete' & it hasn't been changed as long as I've had BCC (5yrs), So if this is an 'old' fx perhaps Vegas could consider acquiring the rights to use it or... I dunno, I'm sure it's not as simple as that but I have seen occasional posts on here where people have asked why the border doesn't fit the cropped image..

If this can be done in VP with the current Border FX + cropping of some kind I welcome any mention of it.

With VP - Use Pan/Crop with cropped image filling frame, Border, PinP to reduce framed cropped image to size and position required.

Gid wrote on 8/8/2025, 9:03 PM

@EricLNZ To make the cropped image fill the frame 'Maintain aspect ratio' has to be changed to No, It doesn't work correctly because you are then using PinP to try & make the image the correct size which is a bit of a guessing game.

This is what you get using the settings you showed.

@Gid Good point. Unfortunately I didn't save my test project and my image doesn't show all my settings. The Position Width and Height are off picture. I suspect I matched the output settings for my crop. That's what I usually do as I find it visually more pleasing to have a cropped area match the project aspect. A square crop in a 16:9 project to me looks odd. Plus you then don't have the problem of black areas or having to distort the image to fill.

As for the guessing game either use grid lines to assist or take the ratio of cropped width to project width and use that percentage for the PIP Scale in X amount.

Getting back to your original post I agree it would be helpful to have an option to have a border follow the cropped image outline irrespective of its shape. As you suggest make it a Feature request post.

@Gid Two ways I've found:

1. (Parent) Track 2D Glow

This is a basic border drawing method, but it has relatively few parameters. I don't really like it.

2. Adjustment Event + Layer Dimensionality + Channel Blend + Sepia

See the video. It's the border drawing method I recently developed, but it only supports VP21+ for a hidden feature of adjustment events is used. (At least I don't think it's a bug. It allows you to replicate the images.) The border layer is independent, allowing you to freely scale it or perform further processing on it, and to adjust more parameters.

However, it's also appropriate to add it as a feature request. VEGAS Pro has always lacked such a convenient and fully functional stroke effect.

This border issue is as long as Vegas exists and brought on many times, I gave up that it ever will be solved...In my opinion it would be easy to replace this border FX by adding an extra border option in the Layer Dimensionality FX.

Also this border issue is depending on your GPU (Nvidia), when I deactivate my GPU in:

than border FX works correctly, when using pan/crop tool for cropping (not crop FX):

but that's of course not an optimal solution.

Thanks all.

@EricLNZ I use images in my videos as pop-ups that maybe show a product I'm using, these images are often screen grabbed & can vary in shape & size, but that suites me, I prefer the continuation of the video in the background & the pop-up not filling the screen or needing to be a particular size/shape.

This is a bad example as it has no border but sometimes I do add a border just to differentiate the pop-up from the background video.

@zzzzzz9125 That's a lot of fannying around & complicates the timeline with Pare/Child needed to isolate the fx.

@3POINT Yep, I have seen posts mention this issue.

I think my main point is that I can open Gimp with HOS on any image, GIMP has border & stroking fxs, that then gets transferred back to VP as a Take. No problem there but any adjustment/cropping means opening again in GIMP.

It would be nice if in VP you could crop, shape, adjust any image or video & bang on a border, BCC DVE does that. I'm lucky I have Continuum but many don't & this kind of feature would be a good addition to the VP arsenal 👍

OMG - it works. Perhaps this is how it's intended to work and what we have is actually a bug when GPU is used?

As far as I'm aware, this issue happens only with Nvidia GPU, AMD GPU seems not having this issue.

I updated my old thread (2022) on this subject. I don't have an AMD or Nvidia GPU in this machine.

Yep, not much issue if GPU is disabled. Therefore a bug lies within it's GPU implementation.
