Suggestions on a simple Network for a fix

I have been trying to work this out and thought I should start a new thread.
The Gear.
New HP Duo core intel machine.Came with Vista.
A laptop from Toshiba.
2 printers.
4 external usb harddrives.

Laptop is used for photomontages, Love Stories, etc.
HP is the Corporate, wedding, commercials, etc.

Vegas and DVD Arch on BOTH.

DVD ARCH doesn't work on HP (VISTA).

Now after rendering a project I cannot put it together and burn on the HP. I need to export over to the laptop.
I have been trying different things to make the workflow better.
Is there a way to settup a simple network between the 2 computers that I transfer while still working? I went wireless just recently so I do have a Linksys router laying around but no clue hat to do with it or where to plug in or if possible at all.
A simple network would be great.

I am at a loss and all EARS here.

Thank you all for all he help.
David again.

Throw away your wireless (not fast enough, and usually not very secure); invest in a small 4 or 5 port gigabit switch. Connect the machines via gigabit ethernet.

Create a directory on one of the "work" disks on each machine; enable sharing on the directories (and allow other network users to modify files).
