super-slow render times in Vegas Pro 14

john-parks wrote on 10/21/2016, 11:28 AM

Hey Forum experts!

This is a note I sent to Magix after an incredibly frustrating day (after updating from Vegas 13 to 14).

Here's what I need from someone at Magix (and sorry if I'm a little curt, I've been on the phone with several customer service technicians who could not help me at all).

I bought the Vegas 14 upgrade yesterday, and once installed found that my render times were multiplied by a factor of 10.  A 90-sec clip won't even get past 2 seconds, and I stop the render after it tells me that it will be over two hours!

I have checked all Vegas 13 settings against 14, and they are all identical.  I've maxed out performance on my graphics card.  I've adjusted RAM for rendering--I've disabled media-core, I've changed almost every setting and then back again for properties and renders.

And then, I called customer support, which was busy the first 10 times I called.  Finally I got someone, but he refused to send me over to tech support (!).  I searched all over your website but there are no descriptions that fit my problem, and even registering for support isn't available in the US at this time (!).

I've posted on Creative Cow and now on the Vegas forum.

My business depends on my ability to turn around projects quickly, and I'm completely stuck with things piling up behind me until I get to speak with someone about this!

So PLEASE can someone help me?  Phone is 850.321.6381, this is my email address (jparks@fsu.edu).  I am so frustrated, and just don't know what to do now.

Thank you--JP

Hi, do you always use GPU when rendering? If so..., you might want to turn them on again for GPU assisted rendering, as long as your card support it. - but you must turn it on first in internal settings.

Hold SHIFT then go to Options>Preferences, and you will find Internal tab, search for GPU, and you will find 'Allow GPU Rendering' with FALSE setting, set it to TRUE.

Do you still keep VP13 on your system? Better use VP13 by this time while waiting for VP14 update...

I discovered that re-booting my computer before each render, dramatically decreased my render times in Vegas Pro 14. Never had to do such a thing with Vegas Pro 13.

Kinvermark wrote on 10/21/2016, 12:45 PM

Can you just go back to Vegas 13 and render there?

john-parks wrote on 10/21/2016, 1:03 PM

Hey there!  Thanks for your answers--Set: Already did that, no change.  Dr. Zen: will try it, although 13 worked so well--I never had to restart.  Kinvermark: I can use it, but projects saved in 14 cannot be opened in 13...

What target format you want to render to?

Might not be the best solution as there is possibility of small changes on the timeline: Export your timeline as EDL / FCPXML / XML. Then, import the recent created EDL / FCPXML / XML on VP13.

Is it ALL render formats or jut one (details)?     Maybe you could render to an intermediate, then go to 13 to render your final.

Kinvermark wrote on 10/21/2016, 3:46 PM

...also,  just saw you post over on COW.   IMHO, you guys seem to be jumping to conclusions by blaming GPU acceleration.   That wouldn't explain a MASSIVE change in behaviour.    You have got 32 bit set on for your project - that would make it slow.  Also, why the odd bit rate number on the render.   Just guessing.

john-parks wrote on 10/21/2016, 4:29 PM

Hey Kinvermark--I think I might have found a solution.  I found a gaming video on changes to make graphics work better, then used the Intel updater for the card, then one of our IT guys brought me a 16GB thumb drive to use as a something-or-other to boost speed...I think it might work!  I'm at a photoshoot now, but will try tonight.  BUT THANK YOU for your thoughts!  I can adjust the 32 to 8, right?

Kinvermark wrote on 10/21/2016, 5:03 PM

Rendering from 8 bit project will be an order of magnitude faster than from 32 bit. Can't see why you would need 32 bit project; you shouldn't see any difference in quality.    Good luck!

john-parks wrote on 10/21/2016, 8:27 PM

I wish I could tell you that it worked...changed to 8 (pixel setting), put in ready boost thumb drive, and rendering still crawls.  If i put a new blue effect on the video it won't render at all; the projected time goes bonkers.

I agree that it can't be the GPU thing, 13 works just fine.  Plus there aren't any updates for my graphics driver (Windows 10).  I'm just frustrated because I don't know what else to do.

What effects do you use in these projects?

On this one I have secondary color corrector and new blue saturation EQ, but I've left the NB effect unchecked in order to have a chance at rendering.  Audio has standard three plus altiverb 7, which is a big one, I know.

I am having rendering problems that I never have in VP13.  Most of the time it just stops.  I changed the GPU rendering and the dynamic RAM and such.  It still crashes.  This program is worthless because it must render final products reliably every time.  I am about to ask for my money back and go to another NLE.

john-parks wrote on 10/21/2016, 8:54 PM

I'm with you, although I'm going to see if anyone from Magix returns my email first.  13 worked like a charm for me, and every setting is identical in 14.

NickHope wrote on 10/22/2016, 2:53 AM

...projects saved in 14 cannot be opened in 13...

I got a simple VP14 project into VP13/12 format using Movie Studio / Vegas Pro version faker (MSVPVF) from Focus on Vegas. Might be worth a try.

Kinvermark wrote on 10/22/2016, 9:54 AM

How about trying to diagnose the problem methodically?  Start with the simplest situation that works...  put one clip on a timeline and render it...  surely there is SOME combination of footage/render format that renders properly?       Then make changes until it breaks - you will then have pinpointed the problem and can look for a solution.  If NOTHING works, then you need to take a serious look at your system setup.

john-parks wrote on 10/24/2016, 1:29 PM

That's exactly what I did, just posted to Cow.  Turns out that it's the New Blue effects bundle that comes with 14--the render times are still slower than 13 in general, but if you apply one of the V6 effects it runs the projected time over 60 minutes (and never shows more than 1% in the window) before I cancel it.  New Blue has been very helpful and nice, but we haven't come up with a solution yet.  I think we'll just have to wait on either another build from them or perhaps a patch from Magix?  JP
